HORACE WINS AT NOWRA SPEEDWAY
hypo-vw - November 19th, 2006 at 11:39 PM

With the speedway season started-up again , Horace got a new coat of 2-pak black thanks to Kevin @ K&D Smash repairs and new stickers thanks to Phil @ Signtism to get the bug prepared for the seasons opening event at Nowra speedway last saturday night .
As Dave had to work at his security job , I stepped into the driving seat to stir up the 1600 sedan drivers . There were 12 cars competing in this class .
The meeting consisted of 3 x 8-lap heats and 1 x 12-lap feature race .

Heat 1 - Horace had drawn grid position-2 and jumped quickly into the lead by turn-1 . Horace led the first heat from start to finish in the very slippery conditions with a 1st place .

Heat 2 - Horace had drawn grid position-10 . I held position for about 1 lap to let the other drivers sort them selves out and the started my charge to the front . Each lap I overtook 1 or 2 cars and many of them I had to pass around the outside . With 1 lap to go Horace got to 2nd position and was very quickly catching the leader who was Herbie . Herbie finished 1st with Horace in 2nd and only 2 metres off his back bumper . It was a great race without any stopages .

Heat 3 - Horace had drawn grid position-1 and from the start allowed the datsun 1600 on the outside to take the lead , so that I could chase him . I chased him for 6 laps in 2nd place before being hit rather hard on the left rear wheel , rear guard , left door and left heater tunnel , by another datsun 1600 that had made a big move down the inside where there didn't appear to be enough space to fit another car . He got his datsun past Horace , but in the process , the impact on the rear wheel had shattered the inner CV joint cage and the joint fell to pieces . Horace still finished the race on 1 axle in 3rd place with lots of traction problems .

Between heat-3 and the feature race I was flat out trying to change a CV shaft , in the dark whilst lying in the dirt . Not too much fun being had at this point of time but several other drivers came to assist with torches and advise etc. I got the axle changed with only minutes to spare before the feature race .

Feature race - Horace had drawn grid position-2 and when the flag dropped at the start of the race I quickly took the lead and left the rest of the feild behind , pulling away further and further as each lap passed . By lap-5 I was already lapping the tail-enders with the 2nd place car a full half lap behind and I was quickly approaching Herbie by lap-6 to lap him , then a race stopage brought the field back together again . With 5-laps remaining , I made no mistakes from the start and quickly left the field behind . Once again I had started lapping the tail-enders . Horace finished in 1st place to win the feature race with the 2nd place car a quarter of a lap behind .
