Qld Hillclimb Championship 1st - 3rd June - Mt Cotton
bat69 - May 25th, 2007 at 08:02 PM

For all you rev heads out there, the QLD Hillclimb Championship is being run on Fri 1st June to Sun 3rd June at the Mt Cotton Hillclimb track.

There are a few NSW beetles heading up to try and mix it with the best of the Imp Pro cars in QLD. Heath & Christine Campbell (Orange 68) and me and the old man (in our 68) are heading up to give it a go.

Anyone else thinking of doing it or going to watch.

I'll be there spectating. I live 5 minutes away. I can sometimes hear the cars from where I am. I'll be there Saturday afternoon definite and Sunday pending family/school fete commitments (BBQ roster).

Yup - like Drew says I'll be running, but won't be much competition for anyone since I'm still learning the ropes !!!

Just had a look at the entry list on the web. 72 cars entries - 5 beetles and one very quick vw powered open wheeler and a couple of fvees. Should be a good one to watch if you got the w/e off.

Web site is as below it anyone is interested.

any updates yet ?

The guys and gals were still learning the track yesterday. Mt Cotton is very technical. Nathan Abbott is into the low 49's, but keen to get into the 48's. John Abbott is in the 52's, not happy with his driving yet (had an uneventful excursion). The guys also learnt yesterday that 50 series tyres are now legal. They're keen to give them a go.

Christine and Heath Campbell are also in the 49's. Heath had a brush with the armco on Friday and ripped off their very nice front historic plate. Dave Sidery, a newbie to hillclimb, impressed everyone, including himself, by knocking 4 seconds off his time. And of course, Peter Gumley is still frighteningly quick, but he has some imported high-tech competition to contend with. It will be very close at the top end of the field.

Do we have the results yet ?

OZ Towdster - June 3rd, 2007 at 07:43 PM

I went and had a look this morning / afternoon and they were all still running and their times were much the same as yesterday but no more bumps , although Christine had had a couple more spins as she was having trouble with the sway bar settings that Heath had set up for his faster runs , but i stayed for her run which was good to see a faultless run @ 50.2 for memory , not as fast as she'd like i think but smooth all the same.
In general i have never been to Mt Cotton before and it is a tight un forgiving coarse but there was some bloody nice cars running in cluding those flying the VW flag with Gumley right up there at the top , and like others i am looking foward to seeing the final results as i had to leave early for a bloody BBQ.

Just got back to NSW and onto the net. A great event was held by all. Some quick times were set by all the VW's in comparsion to the rest of the field.

Peter Gumley won the event in his super charged VW powered open wheeler. He managed to hold of the half million dollar F1 powered machine of Victorias Andrew Howell (their times were 37 sec something). As for the the Beeltes, Heath, John, Christine, Dave and me had a tough time trying to keep up with the locals in their Ford Escorts (mid 46's sec). Heath managed to pull 2nd in class (Imp Pro) with a time in the high 47's. I got 4th with a time in the low 48's and Christine got 5th. I think Dave managed to take either 1st or 2nd in the road rego class (May be he could get on line and up date). As for the exact times I cant recall off the top of my head so best to check the web site for times. They werent posted as of this morning. You will be able to read a full account of the w/e's action in the next issue of VWMA. Happy hooning.

:thumbTalk about fun!!!
Nearly got you Nathan !!! you 48.47 me 48.59- held my breath on that run!!
Heath got 47.77 and Dave got 52.68.
Us NSW people gave poor Dave a bad name"Oh no here comes another beetle" as we all put dirt or nuts on the track and Heath broke the fence when he spun going like a bat out of hell across the top of the first corner(lucky for it saved him going over the edge).
Look out Grafton the VW invasion is a coming:lol:

Heh - not really given me a bad name, but definitely put on a good show !!!

Only my 3rd event and had an absolute blast - took 2nd place, Road Reg 1601-2000. My first m/sport trophy so I'm stoked.

'Twas great to have other Volksies running too - my times are nowhere near the others yet (56's) but I'm hugely grateful for all the tips and encouragement !!!

Not entered for Grafton, but hopefully get down there to spectate.
