For all you north coast vw fans. Come and see some veedub action at round 4 of the NSW hillclimb championship held at Grafton Sporting Car Clubs
Mountian View Motor Sport Complex. There will be some quick vw's going and the mountain view track is an excellent track to spectate at as you can
see the who track. There as also some great facilities there as well (food drink etc)
DATE: 7th & 8th June
Sat 7th June Practice day - midday start
Sun 8th June Race day - 9am start
There are a few VW who have shown interest in going. At this stage me, Heath & Christine Campbel are petty much confirmed as going (thats 3 68
bugs). Along with the Durie beetle, Greg Ward (if he is australia) and possiblely Craig Torrens as another possible provided work/car permit. (thats
another 3 bugs)
Stan the man intends on giving his supercharged open wheeler a blast as too is the supercharged vw open wheeler of peter gumpley. That along with a
few Fvees should make some good dub action.
So who is thinking of going?
I'll be there. Not sure wether competing or not, but always up for some vee dub action when it's close enough to get to. Can't wait
Jezebel and I made the early AM trek down to from Brissie to have a run at Grafton yesterday... I'd like to say it was practice for the NSW round,
but unfortunately I'm away then.
I'd never even seen the Mountain View track before, and although it looked pretty intimidating found it a total blast - talk about a big ass grin on
my face !!!
Totally different feel to Mt Cotton - definitely a lot more hectic in the car with twice the number of corners for roughly the same distance. Totally
loved it - I'll definitely be back down again, and with a few changes to the car... no limited slip diff is a real killer for that first turn !!!
Bummer to be missing the NSW round - with that sort of list running it would've been a great opportunity to see how a Volksy should really be driven
!!!
I won't be there..................my car is being converted to straight line work !!
did anyone go and have a look ?
how did the beetles go ?
Craig,
When are you racing in H/C again???
yep had a look
Nathan took the class record and win on his last run............Heath was only .50? of a second behind .
Cookie brought the Durie beetle for a run but gearbox issues saw an early departure
no show from Stan (as far as i know) and Gumley also as he is rebuilding his engine.
the hellVWnotch got stuck on the wrong side of the flooded creek.
no Toorens'z in sight either
loading some vids now
Heath was flying as usual..............
Quote: |
any times ?
they also have split times.............what did they get for the first split ?
record now at 51.02? for Nathan........which is the run i am loading to link to soon
Heath went 51.5? on that run linked above...........both last of the day (5)
track conditions poor with a shower in the middle of the day and drizzle on the runs i video'd. both teams were surprised at the good times at the
end of the day and noted some lost time from a couple of sections..............i'm sure the record would have been smashed time and time again if
more grip was on offer.
i might be biased, but the beetles look and sound great..............making the likes of escorts and wrx's seem quite boring

Hey Daimo
I can't get to the site to view. Could you post a direct link? Tried cutting and pasting.
Or could you explain how I can view?
regards
Craig
maybe not working because i'm loading up more at the moment?
seemed to work when i checked before.............maybe you can go out to the shed and do some whilst you wait
will we see you at Warrick this year?
Thanks for the vid of Heaths run Daimo, sounded great, car is making good horsepower just by ear.
Was that Nathans car you here in the background warming his tyres?
Cheers Col
yep Nathan in the background.
yes for sure heath is running good HP..............that efi is just so damn smooth too, power right thru the revs, note how quick it recovers when it
bogs under the cam, out of the first hairpin
I might be wrong but just by listening he punched the clutch when it bogged?.
Cheers Col
Nah Colin...it bogged down in second, then he punched it back to first.......that's not the "efi" recovering, just a lower gear for more torque
!
I love the sound of Nathan's tyre warm in the background when Heath is right on the corner !!
any video's of the faster car, the one that set the record ?
i don't think it was first at all, not the same on vid.........anyways Heath will let us know soon enough.............
Nathans record run........
sounds like he punches it back to first...........then he changes into second down the straight, holds second all around the back section then changes
into third for the second pass down the straight, then back to second on the last right hand corner before the finish line.
Track looks nice and dry......and the weather is cool.....perfect for records.
I wonder how Nathans car would go with the latest Haltech efi and data logging, would work well with the twin plugs ! Would have to be better than the
44 idfs he runs wouldn't it ?????
Thanks Heaps Dumone for the footage...............nearly as good as being there !!!!!
it was actually drizzling during and previous to those runs.............not much traction off the line
Bens car had box probs i was told
i thought the twin pluggs mainly got em running better down low, so woould efi be much benefit there?.......not taking anything away from Nathans
efforts nor power, but the orange bug does sound a lot crisper at the track and did even before with the E6K.........i'm going E8 soon too
it's a struggle for you hey Craig, being a 1916, but not a pobjoy
No struggle for me..a pobjoy 1916 won !
it must be a struggle for you knowing they're both 1916's and not strokers!
they both performed extremely well on the day, just one performed better to give its owner a new class record.
as for the weather, they should run it in summer............always seems to rain this time of year !
did you drive your bug up ?
yes, my car,it's all i've got!
i have a sore arse and ears again..........went up past Stans as usual, nice road away from the tourists and wollopers
at least it wasn't icy cold and windy for a change

Thanks again Dumone for the footage of Nathans record breaking run.
The car looks nice on the track , very accurate drive from Nathan. Two quick beetles at Grafton, now that would give the locals something to talk
about.
A true VW nut driving to Grafton in a beetle Daimo. I remember driving to Sydney many times in my Beetle with the constant clap of my ida,s in the
back, guaranteed headache.
Cheers Col
Good one Nat, well done.

Love the Vids Daimo!!
mmmvery nice!
A great w/e was had by all. There was some very stiff competition between the beetles and some local drivers, especially a very fast local driver in a
neat escort. It has always been a very close event in the imp pro class here in the past years, so it was no suprise this years state event was no
different.
A congrats and thankyou goes to the other drivers for a great day of racing and competition, including the vw's of Heath, Christine, Cookie as well
as the other dato and escort drivers. I must say it does feel good to get the win and break the existing class record in the process. I have been
developing the car during the year and my improvements I am now finding are noticible. With a number of other improvements in the pipeline, Im hoping
the car can go even faster.
Craig in relation to the first split, from memory my fastest first split was a 11.8?. My split on the last run (record) run was 12.2?. From memory,
one of Heath's splits to the first timer was around a 12.8?. But dont quote me on these. After the rain the start line was slippy as well as the
entry/exit onto the main straight, flipflop and box. As far as adding injection.... I dont think so. Im a simple person and computers tend to fu#k
with me. I like to rely on old school methods. There is no technology in my car, just simple, excellent and well proven engineering. Why change
something that works well. I like to keep it a period (historic) racer and beetles were not injected in 1968.
Thanks Dumone for the videos. It is great to finally see my car run from the outside. AND FOR THE RECORD. I think my Beetle sounds way better then the
others... But I may just be bias.
You can all read about it in the next issue of VWMA.
