Sides - February 27th, 2009 at 09:38 PM

My guess would be Oran Park..... CT ???

Cam - February 27th, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Looks good :D

What are the specs on this car? Haven't seen much, if any info about it.

dangerous - February 28th, 2009 at 04:12 AM

I think it was featured in VWMA a while back.
Although it was only a N/A 1915 back then.
Hope he did not go to the dark side(Japan).

mactaylor - February 28th, 2009 at 05:21 AM

last time i caught up with rudi he was talking about turboing his 1916 after his blowup he must have got pretty serious.

fullnoise - March 1st, 2009 at 11:27 AM

Hi Everyone,

The car went on the track for the first time with the turbo on Friday at Oran Park GP circuit. Rudi did 2 sessions, while I was there, around 10 minutes each without any hiccups.

That's a huge achievement because the turbo conversion is extremely complex, Rudi couldn't test the car on the street and race tracks are good for bringing out weaknesses.

IT'S STILL A VW!

I'll guess the specs from what I've heard and seen. The amount of work that has gone into this engine is amazing. Hopefully Rudi won't mind me spilling the beans and maybe he'll elaborate further:
- DMS crank somewhere around 72mm stroke.
- 92mm slugs & jugs
- Porsche fan
- Cut down intercooler from a Japanese car
- twin carb-style efi throttle bodies
- A brilliantly adapted cold air box from a modern car

The old 1916 had over 110 RWHP and the new combo doubles that on conservative boost using pump fuel. Now consider that it is engineered to kept cool in circuit racing conditions and not just for a quick pass down a dragstrip!!!!

Hats off to Rudi and his helpers for their engineering skill and for being more than a bit bonkers! There's probably a smiley face to emphasize that, but I think smiley faces are stupid !

bigrudi - March 1st, 2009 at 05:37 PM

.thanks for the kind words guys ,heres a few details to wet your appettites , the engine ran very well on a fat tune 120c oil temps max ,didnt know how the new set up would disperse the heat as this set up was untried, rx3 oil cooler with fzr elect fan to cool engine oil while not racing worked great car also runs water cooled garret turbo off 200sx with fzr yamaha radiator and fann trigered through e8 haltech computer cars booked in for a tune to trimm the bottom off as it is not running hot at all.still plenty of work to do to sort brakes and brake ballance see smoke on 1st post, car is awsome to drive bringing a smile to the dial as soon as you push the loud pedal delivery is smooth and controled, power slides out of corners ,no problems at all but no mashing of the pedal the sucker just wants to do donuts. im still trying get the smile of my face, maybe all those hours i put into this setup was worth it also thanks to john ladimatos, jeff dunn sorry about bulldozing with the new air dam you built, and john molner for helping us out on the day . drive it right at the right place on the track cheers Rudi

Hi

Good on you Rudi, cant wait to see the faces on the other competitors when they see you have a hair dryer on the bug.

Those camera angles make Oran Park look really different, I didn't recognise it.

Camo - March 1st, 2009 at 06:43 PM

Hi Rudi,

Love the HP figure, but the highest points are all under 5500 rpm :td: I thought you said that you rev the tits off this thing

Good to see that CT is still supportive of you, even though he may be your competition.

Rudi, you also recently took me for a drive in your convertible, whats the chance of a run in this one. Oops, forgot it's not registered. I would probably shit myself anyway, I'm not a good passenger.

Keep up the good work and more photos please and one of the engine if you will reveal.

Cheers, Kevin

Cam - March 3rd, 2009 at 11:41 PM

Very nice!
What category do you compete in Rudi?
I'm planning to make it to Wakefield in May, will you be running the car there? Would be great to see all you NSW guys on track in the flesh, I've been seeing all these photos for too many years now.:dork:

bigrudi - March 4th, 2009 at 07:03 PM

car now runs in open sports sedan class4d 3oooccto 6000cc

Camo - March 4th, 2009 at 08:13 PM

Thought you said your car was under 2L ??? Is this fair on the others,

hellbugged - March 4th, 2009 at 09:33 PM

is it still 1916 Rudi??

and have you had much of a involvement/look at the programming of the E8?.........i've been told the data logging is terrific with tuning and cutting the needed dyno time WAAAAY back.......and yeah features for sure are awsome

getting close to going to the E8 myself, so interested in your opinion

555bug - March 4th, 2009 at 09:38 PM

generally the rules calculate displacement* some constant to account for the forced induction i.e. 2l*1.5=3L :)

hellbugged - March 4th, 2009 at 09:46 PM

yeah, understand that, 1.4 X cc i think?

vassy66T1 - March 5th, 2009 at 06:01 AM

I am fairly certain that the CAMS multiplier is 1.7.
It certainly is that for Group 3 cars (IMP)
Makes it a bit of a hard one because even a 1776 turbo will put you in the 3l and over class.
So Rudi has a 1915 * 1.7 = 3255.5cc
Crazy eh?

johny rotten - March 5th, 2009 at 06:40 AM

The E8 has been discontinued

bigrudi - March 5th, 2009 at 08:55 PM

e8 haltech took place of the f9 because required ignition and boost control both computers ran same hp when it was natualy aspirated but i had to graph the dizzy to suit .e8 gives alot more optionsand adjustments on individual cylinders ignition and injection also data logging agreat set up 3.5 hrs to set up from scratch unit can also store several tunes im running 4ls1 coil packs with bosch dual pickup dizzy you can still buy e8s set and forget

hellbugged - March 5th, 2009 at 09:20 PM

yep, cool, thanx.........whats your take on the cams multiplier ratio for turbo?

bigrudi - March 6th, 2009 at 06:03 AM

1.7 for turboed or suppercharged engines rotarys turboed x 3multi valved engines supposed to carry xtra 50kg

bigrudi - March 16th, 2009 at 07:47 AM

first round of nsw super sprint championship car ran 1m 23s oran park gp lost 2nd gear on first warm up lap ran the whole day in 3rd and fourth a lot of turbo lag in third gear instead of second car ran well all day oil temps didnt run past 110c even after a double heat, porsche fan conversion is working better than i expected, more boost wont cause too many heating dramas, the new rear wing and front air dam built by jeff dunn worked well with excelent hispeed stability after dropping the rear torsion bar height on the day no bulldozing sand traps on the day, brakes still need a bit of sorting .well its back into the garage to pull the box and strip thanks again to jeff john boris for helping out ceers rudi

vassy66T1 - March 16th, 2009 at 08:28 AM

Well done Rudi !!

Apart from the gearbox woes it sounds like it was a good first race meeting for the new setup.

matberry - March 16th, 2009 at 08:59 AM

Well done. Thanks for the update, keep em coming.
Let us know what happened to the box, lucky you were able to keep running after loosing 2nd.

vdubrod - March 16th, 2009 at 10:24 AM

It was good to watch rudi drove the nuts off the car and with the problem gearbox rudi was still very quick everywhere but lost a lot of speed in the slow corners. I think rudi has run a 1.20 at Oran Park with his old non turbo motor so a sub 1.20 will be on the cards when it is all sorted. Had a great day with only one angry shoot fired.::tu::dork:

Thomas Wallace - March 16th, 2009 at 05:40 PM

Well done Rudi ,

i was with the subaru crew next to you, see you at the next meet at Oran park in April... shame about the gearbox with second gear, can't wait to see the beast with the extra " BOOST".

Loved the car,,,, " FLAT FOUR POWER ".

cheers Thomas...

nice goin:cool:

bigrudi - March 24th, 2009 at 07:37 PM

finally pulled the box out phew what a job a lot more components to remove than a 1916 with webbers . striped the box down , no gear damage, excess movment at output shaft replaced spacer washer with 15 thou thicker one, fitted genuine sincro ring all nice and snug again ,ceramic coated the turbo exaust housing found the internal waste gate was bleeding off exaust gases made new adjustable bracket ,retuned car now running 209bhp atw on 14lbs boost plenty of potential left in the set up yet as engine temps at 110c after 12 consecutive laps mean there is more boost coming.no idling the car around pits for 10 minutes cooling turbos and engines pull into pits turn it off let the fzr fan and radiator cool the turbo housingasthe engine is not hot at all, this set up working really well so far.porsche fan is an absolute must have, should have fitted one years ago ,thanks to boris at vintage for your advice and support .oh well its back to the garage cheers rudi
