Breather for dry sump setup
dutchy - January 16th, 2010 at 07:40 PM

Hi fellas last time i was out at the race track i had problems
with my catch can filling up with oil, im running an autocraft
dual stage pump, i had the the crankcase breather going to the catch can which is obviously wrong & had no breathers on the
rocker covers, after researching how much pressure can build
up ive decided to run the engine breather & both rocker cover breathers to the dry sump tank & then breath that to the catch can, does anyone have any experiences they could share.
Thanks.

Did you have a breather on the oil tank, or was the only breathing through the case ???

I'm in the process of dry sumping my engine, so interested to hear how you go with the new setup...

yes i had the oil tank plumbed to the breather box but it
was only -6, now it will be -10.

On my Beetle Sports Sedan (1968cc, with Autocraft dry-sump pump) I ran all the breather hoses to the oil tank. The breather hose FROM the tank was 1" bore, and went into the BOTTOM of the 'catch' tank, which was mounted above the oil tank. A breather/filter at the top of the catch tank took care of engine breathing, and any oil that found its way up to the breather, drained back to the oil tank.

Never had ANY problems with that system, although a word of warning - the engine will run hotter dry-sumped than with oil sloshing about, cooling the internals down!

Cheers, Greg

Thanks mate.

My type IV is a dry set up although for off road. It has 3 3/4 breathers, case and two rocker covers, they all go to a breaher box that then is plumbed to the dry sump tank that has a separate baffled breather with a filter to atmosphere.

Maybe worth a PM to Ian Swinkles for his ideas on dry sumps as he is setting one up and is sure to have researched the topic well

Do you mean oil pressure fluctuating?

If so, no n not yet at least, but although the set up has racing miles, it's relatively new to me and no problems evident.
