Buggy Motor Went POP
TheMiniMan - January 23rd, 2011 at 04:28 PM

testing at Lakeside today, couple of sessions testing tyres & wings etc & mainly checking the difference in lap times between last time there & now, after some "Fiddling"

well,,, all was good for a while, 57secs around Lakeside is pretty damn fast i might add (Happy with that part, over the moon actually) but buzzing up to speed warming up for the 2nd session & the engine went POP

so,,, now it`s time the late model injected one went in :-) another 30hp should be cool hey?

:-)
video of warm up laps & engine going Bang here-->

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmE1kYeGPps

it`ll probly be a couple of months before i have the new donk in & sorted cause we have to baffle the sump on the dam things & the later engines have a totally different sump arangment, so a whole new on will need to be made for the new engine, Plus wiring up the computer & all that crap,,, so i won`t be racing for a while :-) who wants to lend me their VW race-car for testing at race tracks ??? :-)

Matty B,,, are we sharing the ride in yours for the Willowbank Autocross yeah???

:-)

I might be at dubs by the Pie after all :-)

bugzla - January 23rd, 2011 at 05:57 PM

Awesome vid Matt... you're so much quicker and lines a bit different, at times was having trouble picking where you were on the track !!!

Bummer bout it going pop (even if it did it pretty quietly)... interested to hear the verdict on what and why...

:(

at least you are alright :tu:

waveman1500 - January 23rd, 2011 at 07:09 PM

Sorry to hear about this. It's an awesome buggy!

TheMiniMan - January 23rd, 2011 at 09:04 PM

Thanks Guys, yeah it`s a fair bit faster than i am at the moment, i was so used-to doin 1min4secs around there in my road mini, & then first time around there in this buggy a little while ago with old hard stuffed slicks, no wings, a little bit of bump steer & the engine running rich as shit,,,, well now all that lot is sorted & pretty damn fast is one 57sec lap & a whole bunch of 58s,,, i`m stoked !!!

& as much as it may sound pig-headed-->I really couldn`t give a shit about the donk because we were allready gearing up to fit the late model injected engine,,, just didn`t plan on it being so soon

The crank & one con rod is rooted,,, oil starvation is the reason,,, & it`s all my own lazy fault,,, i`d been getting away with no oil sump surge baffle all year,,,, when bike engines are fitted to cars they really do need an oil surge baffle mod done in the sump & i didn`t bother to do it,,, i just added some extra oil... now this hasn`t been too much of an issue on the dirt tracks from all the sliding etc, but now we`ve been playing on the bitumen, more grippy tyres , more power, more speed & way more cornering "G"-forces,,, well,,, it`s happened now & i pretty-well expected it, so if only got my lazy-arsed self to blame

new injected engine has another 30hp tho ;-) hee he,,, insert evil laughter here :-0

Bummer Matt, :)

Yeah man we'll dual enter my POS at Pillowbank as long as the brakes hold up eh ??:):) You better come and spanner on the thing, might be nice to drive it to the Pie even....

Mate, your car can certainly get up and go. And to think with the new engine and more power, it will be even quicker.
Good one.

TheMiniMan - January 25th, 2011 at 11:18 PM

Thanks Guys, it`s all sunk in a bit more now watching the video over & over all i can say is i`m a total dork for not keeping an eye on the oil light, if i saw it i would have pulled in earlier, but it`s all been a bit busy for me lately & it all happened so fast, & i`m really getting a bit depressed about it actually :-(

if you can all keep your eyes & ears to the ground for an 04, 05 or 06 R1 complete running power unit for me, that`d be great

i`m told $2000 is cheap (but do-able) & $3500 is pretty normal price, but obviously the $2000 one would be the one i want

& i need everything to make it run except the exhaust system (i have my own)

i know it`s asking a lot & probably not in everyones normal daily vein to ask people you know if they just happen to have an 04,05,06 R1 complete running power unit in their back pocket that they are keen to offload for $2000, but if you could all ask around then i`d be sooper-dooper appreciative
thanks
signed-> totally depressed Matt
:-)

ya bugga!!

:-)

wish you did tho

I might be onto one now,,, I`ll know more on Tuesday

TheMiniMan - February 13th, 2011 at 10:42 AM

update

well we`ve stripped out the old donk,,, bearing on number 3 rooted, crank journal rooted, piston just kissing head, rod stuffed, etc etc etc

so,,, we`ve stolen a 2nd hand crank out of one of the spare engines we have laying around here, it`s had a clutch basket lunched & chipped quite a few drive teeth on the crank gear, but i`m going to dress them up & use it, we`ll pich one rod from that engine too,,, swapping the rings over from the our piston onto the new-2nd hand one & sticking it all back together

should only need a head gasket & a clutch housing gasket by the looks of things, so,,, yippy good news (hope it all works ok) cross fingers

BUT!!!!!!!!!!! i`ve just bought myself a late model (07) injected FZR1 power unit,,, 150hp so a tad more than we had, no more float bowl surge tho, so that`s all cool

These are not quite as good as the real R1 engine but it`ll do me i reckon

especially for $2000

:-)

comes with computer, wiring loom, all injection stuff inc air box, ign switch & dash/instruments

soooooo,,,,,,, this week should be all ahead steam removing engine from bike, re-wiring the buggy to suit the injection loom, probly change a few mounts & such to help position things a bit better,,,

wish me luck boys & girls

the old engine (once it`s back together) we will use it to dummy up the new 4-wheel drive buggy with a trubo to go onto it soon after

cheers for listening

:-)
