NSW Round 7 Ringwood Hillclimb, updated vids 04/08
colin - July 23rd, 2011 at 05:10 PM

On the 31/07/2011 the MG Car Club of Newcastle will host Round 7 of the NSW Hillclimb Championship at there Ringwood racing complex.
Ringwood is a very tight small track that turns back on itself. The unique feature is that cars get back to back runs, ie, a run on cold tyres then straight around again for a run on hot tyres. This is the only event which runs this format.
The track has been resurfaced so quick times and the chance of a new record are good.
Spectators are well catered for being able to sit on the grassy hill and see the whole track from start to finish.
All the usual suspects will be racing including Heath, Greg, Glenn and myself. Nathan Abbott is a slim chance to debut his car?.
See you all there.

Cheers Col

Perfect weather greeted myself and Glen when we arrived for practice last Saturday at Ringwood Park Motorsport Complex.
After unpacking the cars and getting scrutineered we decided to get a few practice runs in for the afternoon. The MGCC of Newcastle have had the complete track resurfaced and it is now really smooth and a little wider in places.
The class record held by Heath was 31.44 secs and on my second practice run for the day i posted a 31.04 sec time, i was shocked and happy, what a shame practice counts for nothing on race day. Glen was ripping the track up and was more than a second faster than his personal best for the track, i actually commented on how gripped up his car was. A remark that was proven when he entered the final turn and the car launched off the inside curb, up on two wheels. I thought the car was going to roll for sure, it was stunt driver stuff, but Glen handled it perfectly turning the car out of the situation and firing down into a gully full of mud.
He took the car back to the pits were we found he had damaged the front apron and ripped the exhaust off at the j tube slip joints.
Glen loaded up and went into town to wash the car down so we could get a good look at the damage. I meanwhile had a couple of tinnies while waiting for his return.
After lots of tinnies and a good two hours of bush mechanics and tube bending in the dark we finally were happy with our repair job to Glens exhaust.
A camp fire was well allight and dinner was eaten, more beers then bed.
Sundays weather was even better than Saturdays and with Heath and Christine arriving we all looked forward to fast times and good racing. Our class was again the most popular with 8 entrants.
I struggled to repeat my saturday times as the track was less grippy for me and my car was a little tail happy. It took me all day to chase the correct set up, however Glen was again on the money pulling fast times all day.
Heath and Christine were fast from the start with there set up spot on, Heath went on to win the class and lower the class record with a super quick time. Final times and places were as follows,

1st Heath 31.86 sec (new class record)
2nd Christine 32.30 sec
3rd Col 32.42 sec
6th Glen 33.90 sec

My stand out performer was Glen, he drove really well all weekend and nailed a very impressive time for his less powerfull car. Closely followed by our exhaust patch
up job, it lasted all weekend as well.

I have lots of footage to post up in the coming days.

Here is my second run of the day on Saturday practice.
It happened to be my fastest all weekend and bettered the class record.
I did a 31.04, the record was a 31.44, bugger it was in practice.

As i mentioned in the race report i struggled with rear tyre grip on Sunday.

In this vid you can clearly see my problem in 3 spots on the track.

Makes for cool vids though.

Here is Glen on race day, you can see the damage to his front apron panel and the tilted muffler after our Saturday evening repair job.

This however didn,t slow him down at all.

Yes it is a tight one , but very technical ,as only a small mistake or error will cost you time.
None of the Beetles get out of 2nd gear. Personally i had the limiter set at 7500 rpm and was hitting it going down into the right hander were the armco railing is.
I would usually change up a gear at that rpm but not at this track, i just raised the limiter to 7900rpm, problem solved.
When your car is finished i hope you venture south to come have some fun with us Marcus.

Cheers Col
