Australian Hillclimb Championships 2011 - Victoria
bat69 - October 26th, 2011 at 07:01 AM
Well the Australian Hillclimb Championship is being run over this weekend from Fri to Sun (28th - 30th Oct) at Victoria's Haunted Hills Hillclimb
Circuit.
I know the VW Beetles are going to be represented by Heath Campbell and Glen Torrens in the Imp Pro Class and Greg Ward in the Sport Sedan class. Do
doubt there will be others running in Fvee and possibly other classes.
Good luck boys and bring home some trophies.
colin - October 26th, 2011 at 06:59 PM
To my mates running at the Aussie titles,
Best of luck guys, have fun, tell us how you all went.
Cheers Col
colin - October 29th, 2011 at 07:11 PM
Just spoke to Heath and he has reported that at the end of racing today he held a 4 second advantage over his nearest competitor.
He is hopefull that tomorrow he can win his second and back to back aussie title, best of luck Heath.
Greg Ward is having a great battle in his class against some wickedly fast Datto,s, and Glen, well, he,s just doing what he does best, and thats have
fun.
Good luck guys.
Cheers Col
Craig Torrens - October 29th, 2011 at 07:32 PM
Best of luck to Heath
Brian - October 29th, 2011 at 07:42 PM
On the last run Greg was getting close to Heaths time but with a much more Expensive engine combination, we'll see what unfolds Tommorrow.
Craig Torrens - October 29th, 2011 at 07:45 PM
I doubt Greg will get Heaths time.............Heath has a better engine, better car, and can drive !!!

WTF? are you tripping craig....gregs new engine combo is a animal..im sure he is still sorting it out along with how to drive the thing.....and paul z
has developed the suspension over a long time to get it where it is.....
any ways, congrats heath, job well done...good to see you bringing the trophy home under the vw banner....love your car and love your driving....keep
up the fantastic work....
fabo.....
Craig Torrens - October 29th, 2011 at 09:59 PM
haha...but its not getting the results, so its not that much of an animal.......it will probably crap itself like his last motor !!!
colin - October 30th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Okay!
Lets all take a chill pill.
Firstly, racing continues today and Heath allthough holding a commanding 4 plus second gap over his nearest rival has not yet won his class.
I think Heath will agree that announcing that he has allready won shows a lake of respect for his fellow competitors in his class.
Greg is racing hard as ever, and we all should get behind him, and all our mates, in racing and flying the VW flag.
It is a massive personal and financial commitment to compete in this years event.
Best of luck guys, and a safe trip home.
Cheers Col
colin - October 30th, 2011 at 02:27 PM
i have received more info about the racing in Victoria from Greg Ward
Not sure how, but a Honda Civic has changed classes, and now is leading the Improved Production class
Honda time,65.14 sec
Heath Campbell 65.38 sec
Greg is running his Yokohama Advan tyres in the Sports sedan class, he is able to run slicks but as yet he is still running the yoko,s.
He is currently 3rd in class time 65.78 sec behind two slick shode cars.
It has been raining this afternoon so times may not get any faster. More updates to come.
Cheers Col

Crikey Craig did you get out of bed on the wrong side the day of your bitter posts? We at one time were all "mates". We travelled and raced together
for a few years and now your becoming bitter and twisted. Gregs current engine as you know, is completely unlike his previous engines and has now been
raced for 12 months at several meetings, revving past 9 and still seems to be going strong. Who cares if Greg beats Heath (although they are in
different classes) just so long as they are having fun and waving the flag for VW beetles, good driver or not.
By the way the comradery amongst the VW racers since you stopped racing is tremendous.

I know when I have dropped in to see them racing in recent times, this is certainly very true.
I don't know if this has anything to do with Craig T being there or not though (tend to doubt it).

It doesn't matter who wins, as long as it's a VW. It's so cool that VW's have been so tough to beat in hillclimbs for decades.
Go you good things!
Hey Col, are you finished with your cam yet? My car's going so well that it must be time to pull apart again.
bat69 - October 31st, 2011 at 09:23 AM
Enough about the negative and more about the +ative.
First of all congratulations to everyone who took the time to travel many hours to VIC and fly the VW flag. Especially for those other racers, like me
who could not get their for what ever reason, I would like to thank you for your efforts.
With the $hit house whether, the boys never managed to improve on their positions from the previous day. Heath claimed 2nd in Imp Pro 1601-2000cc.
Only missing out by the slightest of margins and, Greg claimed 3rd for sport sedans 1601-2000cc. I am not to sure where GT ended up, apart from him
having a heap of fun and mowing some of the mexicans infield.
A big thumbs up to Glen, Greg and Heath for racing the bugs (These are on the only VW racers I know there. Sorry if there are others) and congrates to
Heath and Greg for gaining podium finishes in the AUSTRALIAN HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP. Considering the competition, and the fact there was only a couple
of tenths of seconds between the positions, this in its self is a dame fine effort. After all this was an Australian Championship. Congratulations.
Greg finally now has the new on board camera working, so you can now hear proper engine noise.. The only down side is there is only one pratice run in
the dry. The rest are in the wet which is a real bummer. Either way you still get to see his monster rev off its t1ts.
Which brings us to the subject of weather. Rain... Rain........RAIN!!!!!!It is just un fortunate that the boys did not get the chance to have a crack
at their competion in the dry on Sunday. I think positions could have been improved on and different, given that chance.
Everyone is in transit returning home, so have a safe trip home. When Greg has is 'race cam' down loaded it will be added to this post.

In other news I was at the Skylines Nationals on the weekend and a tortoise crawled across turn 2. Unfortunately it wasn't as fast as a Nissan GTR
and unfortunately didn't make the crossing : (

bat69 - November 11th, 2011 at 05:46 PM
They will be in NSW and the talk is Mountain View - Grafton, Wakefield park or Fairburn Park. With any luck they will be here.

What about Mountain Straight at Bathurst
bat69 - November 14th, 2011 at 07:53 AM
There has been talk for the last few years about Mountain Straight, ever since they first ran it as a hillclimb in 2005. The simple answer is it wont
happen. It is to expensive to run it over a 3/4 day event as fees, safety personal, road blocks for residents etc are greater in comparison to the
Esses, hence the Esses is a chance. Given the fact the last 4 Australians have been held there, it is prob time another venue is considered as there
are numerous other top class hillclimlb circuits in NSW.

Bugger!
My crap box would be fun up that side, whats fairburn or wakefield like as Grafton's not really exciting enough on my bucket
76bug - November 25th, 2011 at 08:34 AM
Greg wards car certainly has some mumbo, JPM Motorsport must be happy to have one of their 1916 combos running in Australia now.
