2012 New CAMS Safety Cage Regs
sander288 - October 26th, 2011 at 07:51 AM

Not sure if everyone will be affected, but if your applying for a logbook after December you need to ensure your cage complies!!!

CAMS has got out a new standard for safety cages, and I suspect alot out there won't comply, mine won't and it was built in Sept 2010.

If your in a 'race' or 'rally' you'll need to provide the cage to the new standard, your only avenue around it is if your a 5th category (historic) or road registred vehicle in a speed event.

See "general requirements" in the CAMS manual below,

The new cage regulations will only effect new log booked cars and the level of bars in your cage will depend on the events you do and passengers you have. The stupid thing is that cages have to be FIA spec. What the new rules will effectively do is, stop bolt in roll cages and out price the club competitor who wants to do his State level rally sprints or get into motor sport in his/her low $$$ car. As for you Shaun. Get your car logged booked now so it complies with the current rules.

if you follow the speed read link, there was mention of a grace period.

If you send in your logbook form, photo's etc and fee, they will open a 2011 book and hold it until 31 december 2012. You then need to complete the cage and get the inspection before then and they will release the book. pretty fair for people who are building cages at the moment and will flow over to next year.

Check the info on the website.

Rumour has it ANDRA are going the same way.I made sure that my cage was done this year.

The new regs don't seem that more arduous. Just seems like the optional stuff is now mandated. The only problem will be getting it past engineering if its to be kept road rego'd......

I've just gone through the updated regs quickly, and from what can tell the cage in Jezebel still meets current specs... not bad considering had it built end of 2005 !!!

;)

Agree with BiX that rego can be a hassle - that's why a good idea I think to get your engineer involved early on.

Also I think better cages is always a good idea - just look at some of the accidents lately in V8SC where people have walked away without a scratch, all because of good cages and safety gear.

My cage won't comply for 1 reason, and that it my diagnal support does not have it's hgihest point on the drivers side!

I'll try and put my logbook app in (historic $190!!) but I don't have all the nessesary additions to the car to fit in the schedule A or B so I may get knocked back.

I'm going to send an email off to CAMS and see what they reckon.

your cage welded together or in Shaun?

Sides - October 28th, 2011 at 10:14 AM

Shaun... couldn't you just get a second diagonal put into the main hoop with it's highest point on driver's side ???

It'd be two half pipes diagonally, and altho the rules say that 1 of the diagonals has to be a single straight through length I don't think they said which diagonal it had to be.

The extra $$$ in making it stronger is well worth it if you end up upside down.

That's it sides hey...simple fix

Even better if it's not welded, undo the rear bars and turn the hoop around, easy

I'll see if flipping it around will work!! Then the only thing i'd have to get would be door bars which aren't expensive!

Thanks for the help fellas, practical as always... I read some of the crap CAMS comes out with and start looking at my wallet getting emptier and emptier! :tu:

Goal is to get more track time in 2012, only got out once this year!! Going to try and do some hillclimbs to keep me busy, cheaper than the histroic events too!

Cheers
