Sydney drags 18th Dec
bat69 - December 18th, 2013 at 09:43 PM
Glen Torrens and I took our circuit/hillclimb bugs to the drags tonight and lets just say we both walked away pretty happy. This was my first foray in
a straight line and with nothing changed from the last hillclimb I did I managed to push my bug alone in a 13.5. GT posted a best of 13.8. We got some
footage which I will post up later.
Here are some photos from the WSID media page:

Hpe you remembered not to apex the corner at the end of the run off area to return road.

I thought you were suppose to apex that corner @ 90mph. Especially when its in front of the V8 Soarer you just smoked?
Note to self. Drag racing is only in a straight line. Its a strange feeling slowing down a few 100 metres B4 going around a corner!

Thanks Wayne. Yes we had heaps of fun. It was great to get out and use my car for only the 2nd time this year. Unfortunately I have had a few
circumstances out of my control this year which contributed to this and prevented me from using the race car. Either way I really enjoyed it and will
be going back next year for the odd go. It has helped me with my launches for the hillclimbs.
Since I got the 'new' car back up and running I have had troubles with getting it off the line. I kept smoking it all the time, so this event was a
chance to hone that skill and try a few diff things to get it right and see what works for my set up (keeping in mind its a circuit set up and not
really set up for straight line or 1/4 mile).
I managed to drop my 60' by a few tenths which is a pretty good thing. If I had a couple more runs I think I would have dropped it another tenth or
so as I started to find what worked for my car (rpm launch etc). Bring on next year.

Thanks. Had a heap of fun and Im sort of hooked. How ever I cant be to far gone because I really wanted to take that loop corner a hell of a faster
then what I was. The best bit was having a few people coming up and commenting on the car and how well it looked, went and sounded which was a huge
complement for me. And I smoked some bigger HP cars too.
My fastest time is as follows:
60': 1.9
1/8: 8.5 @ 79mph
1/4: 13.5 @ 96mph - 7300rpm 4th gear.
I did a couple other 13's (13.8, 13.9). Both in the low/mid 96mph. The 13.8 had a 2.1 60 foot and 96.1mph and the 13.9 run had a 96.5mph and 1.9 60
foot. That run I managed to pull 1st to 4th off the start line which sorted f@#ked the run but the times were still pretty good. My last run was the
quickest. Gear ratios are 3.0, 1.9, 1.5 & 1.2 on a 4.1 cw&p.
Keeping in mind this is the full circuit racing set up. I changed nothing on the car so it still had the 205 tyres all round, 4deg neg camber front
2.5 rear, sway bars, standard pully etc. I know this is dumb but I still had 30psi in the rear tyres. I could rock up at Eastern Creek tomorrow and do
20 laps without an issue.
GT's car ran:
60': 1.9
1/8: 8.9
1/4: 13.8 @ 93mph.
GT's gear ratio is stock 1st & 2nd, lower 3rd (1.5) and stock 4th on a 3.8 cw&p.
His car and mine are vertically identical. Very similar chassis and roll cage, identical suspension, sway bars, brakes & engines. Main difference
being mine has injection, Porsche fan and 4 gear c/r box and GTs 48IDF webbers, VW fan and 3 gear c/r box. The reason for this is GT drives his car to
the track some times and the stock 4th allows him to drive on the freeway. He drove it from his shed to his house which is a 20klm trip btwn the
suburbs and highway during peak hr b4 loading it up and heading to Sydney. There is only 1 hillclimb where you use 4th so its not that much of a
disadvantage. He how ever will be changing to a lowered 4th and I'm sure we will see him gain a few mph.
Now! What changes can I make to get 100mph and lower the time a few more tenths???? I wonder!

Well done guys, great effort.
Larry and myself had such a hoot at Warwick that we are both going to enter the VW Sydney Showdown Drag Race event at the end of Feburary 2014.
See if you guys can make it.
Cheers Col

Well done guys!!
Where does your car make max HP? I think it may be running out of gears, taller tyres could make a difference to your terminal speed.
bat69 - December 30th, 2013 at 07:02 PM
Hi Gracey. Max hp is @ 6300 and max torque is a tad over 5000
