I just found this pic of shrapnel, taken at the Day of the VW in melbourne in 1985.

And this one of Peter Keegan in his last car he used mainly for hillclimbs, he sold this to Dave Butler,
This pic was taken at the nationals drags.

Jeff Unwin in Hell Bug, if you look at the pic closely you can see Birchall's '56 Judson oval in the back ground!

nice pics Dave , I too was there to see houndog whip the V8 bug and what a great day it was . I captured the entire 1988 VW drag event on video . The footage is looking very old these days though . Other highlights included Steve Mullers smokey burnouts ( although the smoke was exiting the stinger pipe ) , Micheal Taits 17 quarter mile passes in his type-3 wagon , Unwins cool burnouts , Michael Schymitzeks kombi 2 litre trying to lift the front wheels and Ross Freestones award for transmission breakage in Houndog . WHAT A GREAT DAY !!!!:bounce:bounce:bounce

My old man always used to talk about a drag kombi (splitty from memory) over east somewhere called Aunty. Anyone ever heard of that one ?

Was that the meet at Canbera, if it is then I remember clearly (which suprises me) Hound Dog just about lift the wheels in every gear nearly putting it into the guard rail a couple of time when it launched and flogging the V8's arse every run, I also remember your car I think Dave bent a push rod ( now the memory is really getting scary). I remember most, cracking out a 15.6 sec pass with my 1776 which I remember everyone was impressed with. ( I better go have a rest now, brain hurts, every thing bluurrrryyyyy).

vw54 - March 9th, 2005 at 04:43 PM

Yep i think i ran a 24 second 1/4 for my fiest pass down the track.... great fun Beck

Che Castro - March 11th, 2005 at 11:02 AM

warb - March 11th, 2005 at 11:12 AM

nice pics..

VWFREAK - March 11th, 2005 at 11:28 AM

Nice one Dave, go to see not much has changed over the years.

Menangler - March 11th, 2005 at 12:01 PM

For memory the V8 ran in the low 12's and hound dog ran 11's.
It was a very rough track and Hound dog was bouncing all over the place, I would like to see it run at eastern creek on a smooth track.

Totally AWESOME

LOWBUG - March 16th, 2005 at 04:59 PM

Yes from memory Hound Dog kicked its ass every time, that kinda throws the power to wait theory out the window.

humpty - March 16th, 2005 at 06:08 PM

What ever happened to Hound Dog and Shrapnel and some of the really old cars like Yo, Yo! and PK's CAMEL sponsored car? Anyone know?

Hey Doug....The splitty that you mentioned...I think that was the mid engine OLDS powered wheel stander from memory...I think I have a mag story on that one from the early 70's....

I'll see if I can russle it up!

It's a shame old Mick Tait isn't playing with VW'd anymore...I do keep on him about it!

dangerous - March 16th, 2005 at 10:00 PM

Houndog is still owned in Tamworth ,by Ross Freestone & is roumered to be nearly ready to race again.

Shrapnel has changed hands, is now red, but cant recall who has it. I think it was in SA, but now in central NSW I think.

Keegan's car was owned by Darrel Yates, of VolksMod on the Gold Coast, but was sold last year to be returned to the street (a kids first car!....COOL!)...was last on the road in 1969!

Earl Krygers car, YO-YO is missing in action. I would guess he would be about 70 by now. Try a Victorian phone book to start the search if you are keen!
