Gene / Gary Berg Downunder tour 1995
vw54 - May 5th, 2005 at 12:01 PM

I was searching for some old pics of the Bergs tour 1995, Vintage Vee Dub Supplies brought the 67 Berg Drag car down under for a series of races, and ended up setting the Australian record for a 4 cylinder normally aspirated car.

This record still stands at 10.57 @ 127.66 mph.

Unfortunatly it was taken from another VW owned by Ross Freestone ( Houndog ) who set it in about 1991, 10.81 @ 123.15mph

No matter its still owned by a Volkswagen.

here a pic i took on the start line during practice at the old Eastern Creek track in Sydney, Gary red lighting ( unusual )with the wheels in the air.

Heres a copy of the time slips on the night, with a signature from the ANDRA official, to authenticate the record.

Nice little bit of history that !

Does the record really still stand ? surprising, although I guess nobody except the honda boys and us dubbers really play with na 4's anymore.

I'd expect if someone set out to get the record they could do it with a wild sigma or something else that you can get big capacity into.

Like an oval with a 2.5L type 4 in it..... isnt there a bloke over east somewhere that is running close to these numbers ?? or is he in the 12's ?

Doug Sweetman - May 5th, 2005 at 01:39 PM

Nope, I was wrong;

Henry Spicak in 94 ran 11.48 in a manx NA, and morgans ran 11.55 with nos in their beetle late last year (according to the official Aussieveedubbers top 50)

So the bergs are pretty clear of the pack (vw wise) right now.

yeah is a bit of history... I had to get the ANDRA guy to sign the time sheet.

Yep, still stands officially - just checked the Andra site.

Its all stuff thats available from Bergs. Its 2610 ccs.... and has 56mm webbers fitted and still runs a swing axle gearbox.

VWCOOL - May 5th, 2005 at 06:02 PM

Yeah, Dave, I remember that. I was there on the night, too... hanging around the startline. Seeing a NA VW launch next to me and run 10s was an amazing experience...:thumb

I remember seeing Gary race at Willowbank at the Jamboree, & had him sign a T-shirt for me.

In the States they reckon the black Berg beetle has done the most 1/4 mile passes of any car in history. It started out as a recovered stolen car in the late sixties, and has been continuously raced since then.

Bergs good engine was 95 bore & 94 stroke =2665cc....even though that 2610cc is what he told every one. Car was 1680lbs with Gary aboard. He also set the MPH record @W'bank @ 128.98mph.=about 9000rpm in 4th gear.Trans was a converted 091 bus trans with Dave Folts swingaxle .That engine was worth US$30000...plus dutys. All Motor rules would not allow this car to run because it is too light(1750lbs is the current minimum) & had aftermarket heads & case.Any thing else people need to know, I took alot of notes when he was here, and stuck my nose into every nook & cranny....it was a surprisingly inconsistent car.

VWCOOL - May 5th, 2005 at 11:12 PM

I think I remember he had to get an Aussie roll-cage installed, too

vwrallycar - May 22nd, 2005 at 08:27 PM

good memory, i was actually down for the nationals that year and from memory it rained on the saturday and never got to see the car run--- what a shame
but got to hear it on the sunday at the show, and it was unbelievable

amazer - May 23rd, 2005 at 10:05 AM

95 was a great year. The BEST year. The ONLY amaroo supersprint year. Flat strap in a turbo kombi over the crest of the hill and then around the sweepers on the back of the circuit. Nothing like it. Sucked that it rained at the drags to stop the top cars from running.

Hmm who won that year.

Winner VW bracket... Chris Fraser
Winner of formula libre supersprint... Chris Fraser

Maybe I should have had a 10th anniversary party.:party

Still dirty that bracket winners cant run in king of the hill, as I remind Dave every single year.
OK so I won the S/S because Stan won outright so didnt get the class trophy. Never mind, coming second to stans open wheeler is nothing to be ashamed of.

Different format again next year

amazer - May 23rd, 2005 at 04:57 PM

did you get KOH that year?

Another 4 or 5 years and we can line up my 56 against your 54. How much head start will you have to give me?
