Who's interested in a turbo header?

Hi all,

I am already planning the rebuild of my old 1641 > 1916 turbo engine and plan to make a new turbo header for it in the same style as my new one on my 2332, but out of mild steal instead.

The thing is, I can make multiple headers as easily as I can make a single one. So... Is there anyone else out there in vw land that too has the dream of turbo power that needs a header to get started with?

I figure it will cost me about $250-300 in materials per header to manufacturer, so I figured I'd sell them for about $500 each.

All headers would be the same design as my new 2332 header, 1.5" tubing with a 4 into 1 collector and 2" up pipe. To allow for diferences in engine width due to barel shims, i'll be adding extra flanges from the cross pipes from the 1+2 cylinders. This will allow a spacer to be fitted between the flanges and allow the header to fit any engine.

It would be a complete header, with the exception that the up pipe to the turbo would need to be welded on. This is necessary to allow you to choose your own turbo (T25 or T3 flange) and appropriately set up its position for optimal oil drainage on your car. This can vary depending on the size turbo you run and the size crank pully you run also.

I'll be starting work on this in about 3 months, but I thought I'd just throw this out there now to see if anyone was interested.

Cheers,

Thats a fantastic idea - I expect you to sell a few. I'd think about flogging a few to the vw shops around the places if you were keen.

At least they can be sure of the build quality and effectiveness of the header..... just look at your bug !

So what is in the future for your 1641 (apart from 94mm p & c's !) ?

Yeah thats about it. A set of 94mm's, total seal rings, and a set of new clevite 77 bearings. As a backup turbo engine it will still make an easy 250hp I think.

I'm keen to see what 15,000k's of being driven like I hated it has done to the bearings, pistons etc. Also, it will be interesting to see how the 044's held up.

If the wrx head conversion goes well it might end up with a pair of wrx heads on it too!

I got permission from my manager to use the 4 axis CNC machines here at work for making the conversion plates and stud girdles this week, so I've just got to finish the design off and I can punch out the first set for Wibbles engine. I've asked about doing a volume run of them too, so I might be able to make a conversion "kit" to wrx head convert vw engines... we'll see...

hey dude, im in townsville and am a huge fan of the car. if the headers come to plan then i would definately buy one off you. i have a stock wrx turbo and was wondering if that could bolt onto the header. good luck with the head, your doing great work, keep the vw hot rod scene going up here.
