Dave Butler Runs 11.690 in All Motor
dangerous - August 28th, 2005 at 08:18 AM

Had another 4 runs last night and did a little more fine
tuning and driver practise.
12,467@113.78 bogged start & spuntyres in 1st & 2nd.
12,465@113,95 nearly stalled, then spun tyres & went right. Had to back off for a bit.
11.850@114.50 finally left the line without bogging. Shifted @ 6000 in 1st & 2nd(short).
11.690@114.77. Better 1.65 60' but still short shifted 1st & 2nd.
Still looking for some lost power, and trying to forget that
there is no boost to help, but it is all in one piece for the
Jamboree on 17th & 18th of September.
The air was very good, it got down to 34 ft relative altitude on the last run.
Car weighs 1830 lbs with me aboard (830kg) & all motor
minimum is 1750.

reub - August 28th, 2005 at 08:58 AM

Congrats. Will be interesting to see what the n/a engine does.

PS. Like your signature 'Go the Volksies! Whatever the engine!' My thoughts exactly.....

dangerous - August 28th, 2005 at 09:18 AM

Thanks Reuben.

Adolph - August 28th, 2005 at 09:36 AM

Great!!:starhit:
Would like to see what it does when it is closer to 1750lbs.
Are you going to lighten her up a bit?

Hermann

dangerous - August 28th, 2005 at 09:54 AM

I may take some weight out, but only minor things like the standard front windscreen that still has the shattery type glass.
Most of the gains should come from keeping the engine up in the power.
In first and second it doesn't even get to peak power...same in 4th.
More time in the seat will fix that...and maybe a ratio change if funds permit.
Have 1.26 3rd and .89 4th now.
Need a 1.00 4th and possibly a 1.29 to 1.35 3rd. They are 002 style gears.
5.429 diff with 28" tyre.

Craig Paton - August 28th, 2005 at 06:37 PM

Congrats Dave

That's about 210 black track Hp.... with that weight!

Low 11's must be well in your sights!

dangerous - August 28th, 2005 at 06:43 PM

Yes Craig, there is still 50hp missing, but I suppose if everything works out,mid elevens are on the cards...you know I hate to guess or hypothesize!

Craig Paton - August 28th, 2005 at 06:52 PM

I'm sure you'll find that 50!!:ninja:

And according to the slide rule, that should possibly net you a 10.8-10.9@ 122mph.

But then, you already know that!:D

dangerous - August 28th, 2005 at 06:57 PM

Thanks Craig!
How about starting a post regarding your engine up-grade...we're all dying to hear!

Craig Paton - August 28th, 2005 at 07:08 PM

There's not a lot to tell as yet! Pete's been busy doin other stuff, Stan's finished the machining etc.

Last time I spoke with Pete, he said he's almost finished the case. That was about a month ago, so it'll be a while yet!

Probably won't be ready for another a month or 2. So I'll just polish my Beetle in the meantime! :D

dragbug - August 28th, 2005 at 08:09 PM

What does this car actually use for the power plant?

dragbug - August 28th, 2005 at 08:19 PM

THANK CHRIST!
I was really hoping it wasn't some dum jap transplant.
Proves you dont need water to crack the quick times!!!!!!!!

Kepp it up Dave,
See you on the track soon!!

Craig Paton - August 28th, 2005 at 08:25 PM

Dragbug

Dave's n/a engine is AutoCraft with mech fuel injection!

Formally out of Stan Burrows VW Midget speedcar!

I'm not sure of the exact size but it's around 2600cc.nn[ Edited on 28-8-2005 by Craig Paton ]

dragbug - August 28th, 2005 at 08:31 PM

Now that makes me go all goey.....
Must sound like heaven to hear it on full noise.

Craig Paton - August 28th, 2005 at 08:34 PM

I heard the engine when it was raced by Stan a few years ago! Man it was Healthy!!

Im sure when Dave gets it fully sorted, it will be a weapon!!

dangerous - August 28th, 2005 at 10:24 PM

Pauter case and heads: 2700cc.
82 stroke.

Craig Paton - August 29th, 2005 at 01:04 PM

S*+% I was close! NOT!

My Apologies Dave! Been away from the action for too long!:sniffle:nn[ Edited on 29-8-2005 by Craig Paton ]

Doug Sweetman - August 29th, 2005 at 01:52 PM

Bloody good Dave, great to see it turning some nice times.

Very consistent on the terminal speed - do you expect much of a change when you stop short shifting it ?

Shame theres no decent drag VW's operating in WA right now..... must be a lovely sound, 2.7L of air cooled nastiness......

dangerous - August 29th, 2005 at 09:53 PM

Hey Doug,
I really don't know what to expect except to say
there is probably a couple of tenths left in it.
On the minimum All Motor weight it should run 117mph
with the same power
which is lower than expected.
There are many things to investigate both with tuning and driving.
Also gearing is not ideal....too many excuses I know!

Doug Sweetman - August 29th, 2005 at 10:49 PM

hey at least you are out there running it and learning ! they arent excuses, they are just future opportunities.

Any ideas where the missing power has gone ?

hypo-vw - August 29th, 2005 at 11:05 PM

Well done Dave , those are excellent times for a naturally aspirated engine . Can't wait to get the opportunity to hear it run at the strip !! Get some pounds out of it and set records mate !!

dangerous - August 30th, 2005 at 06:43 PM

Thanks everyone for the positive input. It really spurs on the enthusiasm!
After a couple of days to think about it, I am steering towards fuel system tuning.
I have to get the shift light to come on in the gears other than 3rd, but I don't
really think that the power is hiding there...we'll see I guess.

shiftyvw - August 30th, 2005 at 08:03 PM

How much heavier is the pauter compared to a similar autocraft setup?

dangerous - August 30th, 2005 at 08:18 PM

would guess about 5kg.
will weigh it when it's appart next.

Craig Paton - August 30th, 2005 at 08:39 PM

Dave

What crank and rods do you have in your Pauter?
Do you still have that Billet crank that you manufactured youself? If you do, should post a pic to show your machining skills!

Also what valve size do you run, and I guess they'd be longer than T1 standard length?

dangerous - August 30th, 2005 at 09:18 PM

Craig,
The crank is a billet 82mm flanged superlite made in
Australia and finished at Crankshaft Eng. but not by me.
I still have my 90mm crank that will bolt in for 2965cc
and the extra compression that always comes with extra
capacity. A good upgrade for later!
The rods are currently 5.7" eagles to siut 2.1" chev bearings and gudgeon pins.
The 90mm crank has carrillos but they are heavyer.
My spare engine has brand new Pauter billet rods and another 82.5mm stroke billet
crank that I finished last year.
Next time you drop by work you can photo it...you will be amazed how chunky
I made it for blower use!
Current valves are 52.8 inlet and 40.6 exhaust.
Spare engine has 54 and 40.6...Titanium of course!
Lengths are around 5.05"

Craig Paton - August 30th, 2005 at 10:08 PM

Geez Dave

I wouldn't mind all of your spare bits and pieces! :duh
That 90mm crank in your pauter block, damn near 3L!!!!!!!

Top it off with those big Titanium valves!!
Love to see that in your tube car!!!!!!:thumb

Pro-Stocker 3Litre n/a

58bbugger - August 31st, 2005 at 03:21 AM

What a beast!

Cant wait to see it at it's full potential.:beer

1303Steve - August 31st, 2005 at 10:34 AM

Hi

Well done, Zoom magazine have all the records in each issue, I think the MPH is 121 for that class, hope you can crack that one day.

Steve

dangerous - September 1st, 2005 at 08:14 PM

Hi Steve,
I think the current record for All Motor is 12.19@105.77.....unless you have other info?
