VWMA Drag Day
dangerous - July 1st, 2006 at 04:12 PM

Given that this is the Dragracing part of Aussieveedubbers I thought we might start up a post of who is going to come along
to the event, and who might come up a week early and run the Jamboree Import meeting too.
I have every intention of running both events, but being that I will be unemployed by then, the dollars will decide.
I would encourage everyone to run there cars at either event to get the Volksies the exposure that they deserve.

HGFS - July 1st, 2006 at 04:14 PM

When is it?? I guess you're talking QLD

It is at Warwick raceway, but would love to see as many interstaters as possible.
Come for a holiday and see the Jamboree too!

I would really like to think I would have my engine back in and running then, but It's probably a long shot

hypo-vw - July 1st, 2006 at 08:49 PM

I will be there with the turbo oval .
Looking forward to the camping side ( on site ) of the weekend as much as the drag racing side of the event .
Also looking forward to seeing the largest bunch of quality VW drag cars and street cars ever brought together for Australias first American style event . DRAG RACING / VW CAR SHOW / STREET PARADE / SWAP MEET / DEALER STANDS etc .
Just cant wait !!

I should be there with my 1916 powered Speedster. I'd love to bring the Spyder as well but it's not eligable. We'll be travelling in convoy I think from Syd.

Dasdubber - July 4th, 2006 at 10:32 PM

Great stuff Peter - glad to see you will make the trip up. Can't wait to see the speedster in person!

Stanley - July 5th, 2006 at 06:52 AM

Whats this about hotels....what about camping. Can we camp where we park or do they have a designated camping area?

VWMA Editor - July 5th, 2006 at 10:32 AM

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the interest shown so far. An event like this would be good to have on the calender every year, and not just in Queensland, so here's hoping all the talk about having a Volkswagen only motorsport event translates into people actually rocking up.

There is a camping area on site in a shady, relatively quiet (it is a drag track after all) spot, well away from any walk through pedestrian or vehicle travel. Or you can choose to camp with your pit area if you are racing.

Just a reminder - there is a cut off date of 1st September for competitors. This assists me in planning and running the event smoothly. You can turn up on the day to race, but the cost will be an additional $30. Please check the website for all the details
http://www.vwma.net.au

Cheers
Craig

vw54 - July 5th, 2006 at 10:39 AM

Hopefully we will be there with the Vintage Car

dangerous - July 5th, 2006 at 07:11 PM

Which one Dave?

VWMA Editor - July 7th, 2006 at 01:10 PM

After some discussions this week with owner/drivers wishing to compete in VW Specials, a new category has been entered.

VW Specials - Must be either VW Powered and/or more than 50% VW mechanicals and chassis.

For example, a kit car running a VW motor, or an open wheeler such as Stan Pobjoy's and Peter Gummley, and any Formula Vees that way inclined to strip race. If in doubt, please call me first before filling in the entry form.

speedster356 - July 7th, 2006 at 04:20 PM

Dave.
The new Vintage car, as there is no old Vintage car now due to pillaging of parts!

dangerous - July 7th, 2006 at 09:05 PM

I wonder if Dave can get some spy pics of the Vintage car before the event...

So Dave Butler... Why you gonna be unemployed by then.... I miss something? And Dave Becker.... What happen to that mad early 60's ratter that you guys built back in 91-92?.... That was nuts!..... And Craig.... If all goes well with this event, you might get a contingent from WA next year!... Just give us a little more leadtime!... Be good to have some VW welly going on!

Menangler - July 10th, 2006 at 10:41 AM

Quote Dave Becker.... What happen to that mad early 60's ratter that you guys built back in 91-92?.... That was nuts!.....

I had almost fogotten that thing, the body went to the tip, the floorpan was sold to someone??, wheels and tyres did the rounds and I think Rod Penrose ended up with them, engine got parted out, I think Carbo still has the heads, crank & rods, rockers, 52 IDA's were sold to a couple of rotary guys.

I have attached some photos of it, spindle mount front wheels, nice and light!!. 1916cc engine that spun to 9000rpm, close ratio gearbox, don't remember what it ran over the 1/8, I do remember it broke a couple of Pauter rocker arms.

Huh!..... Ripper stuff Dave.... I remember that frontend lift!... Stange way to get a workout!..... By the way, thats me in the background (The bald guy with the tan coloured shirt on!).... That car was way ahead of its time... People are trying real hard to built cars like that now!.... If I remember rightly, you couldn't get it to run at the Nationals that year.... It was poppin' and bangin' a lot!

Aaaa the memories!....
