Been putting some thought to building a turbo 1200 or 1300. Just wondering if anyone can give some tip or advice. Unsure about a few issues, such as head mods, comp ratio, cam choice, ignition cuve, and if a push system will perform better than a pull system. Likewise, efi versus carb/s. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Josh.
If it was me I would use a 1300 twin port motor.
I think BUGBOY was going to build one a while back.
1300 twin port is as small as i would ever go.:thumb
Try here and do a search in forced induction forum. Lots of valuable info.

I think I can remember someone doing it.
Hi Hertz,
I am going to build a turbo 1200/1300. I have a turbo from a 1.3l toyota starlet, so the boost should come on very low in the rev range.
I have yet to start it as I am still working on the car......
I am thinking of starting out with tthe 1200 that i have and getting it all plumbed up on the etc, then build a 1300 twin port with a new case etc,
possibly even go EFI using mega squirt, just as a project so that I can teach myself the whole process etc.
Will keep you updated when I get to it, if you like.
Matt.
Why bother? I dont see the point of spending a lot of $$$$ for not much outcome cause believe me turbos arn't cheap. Its all about flow and if your
filling your engine with air and cant expell it (ie engine doesn't breath) why bother. If you want to go budget do a 1600 TP. Each to there own I
suppose.
T54
T54's right.....in both respects. I'm in the process of doing a 1641 turbo. I'm doing it on a budget but so far with out the inlet manifold and
exhaust I've spent 3K. If your going to turbo even with low boost and a small turbo you gotta think about full flow oil, compression, and the added
heat just to name a few.
If your doing it because thats all you've got cool, but if your pistons and barrels are worn you gonna get into some issues. If your going to change
them spend a little amount of $ and get some 1600 B&P. instant HP increase even if you run SP.
I'm no expert but at the end of the day go the turbo but do what you can afford and put some thought into it so you can spend your hard earned $
wisely. Other than that go for it and have some fun.

I have built one, It has 8.2 to 1 compression, puts out 401hp @6000 w/17lbs boost. If I was going to build a high output street engine, I would
consider it smart. The added engine temps only apply when you are on boost, otherwise it has very low compression and generates less heat than a higher
compression n/a street engine.I should have done it years ago, hope you have fun,

hey mate i think we are talking about an actuall 1300.
Is your engine a 2.4 based on a 1300 case?
Not the same.

Geez a 410hp 1300 would be nice though!
There's a post on The Samba about power up options for the 36hp if you're interested.

Hahahahah,
You are right, they are not the same, but I would still recommend turboing any street car for the benifits. Mike
Do it.... And to hell with the nahsayers!..... A cheap turbo engine can be built.... Shoot... I picked up a perfect little IHI the otherday for 100 bucks.... Dunno why... It was just there!.... Wack it on a nice little 1300 and see if (when!) you can break it!
Humpty thats pretty damn cool, was that a baja exhaust? What kind of slider carb is that? Mike
These engine are not mine (mores the pitty!), but I loved them when I spotted them, so I grabbed some shots..... But you are correct Mike.... That is
a baja exhaust and the carb looks to be a Stromberg.... Its a pretty common carb found on old british cars.... Jags and Rovers mostly.... I have heard
they make an excellent forced induction carb....
You see that first engine in the oval.... Look closely.... Its a 36'er!
I can barely make it out,but think I can spot the built in generator base. I really haven't seen many of the 36 motors except in mags. Still is pretty cool, wonder how it did compared to stock? I am no expert but from what I have seen it is mostly about matching the compression ratio with realistic boost levels. More compression, less boost, less compression, more adjustment for boost. Mike
Humpty posted a 36er with a blower once before.
Have a look in the "Dave Butler, some history", post.
What... you mean this one Dave?

You know,I think VW owners are universally tinkerers,we all see these cars as more than tranportation ,there are so many configurations. I see stuff everyday that I have not seen before, some stuff I think I am imagining for the first time and then I pick up a book or magazine and see where it has been done before by someone else. I have seen vw's as air compressors, water pumps, airplane engines, driving refrigeration units on trucks ect... and it never stops suprising me when I spot one being used in a way never before seen by me. Mike
I hear what your saying Mike.... I know a guy who runs a 1915cc powered Bobcat!...
And thanks TSV for the carb correction (sic).... I did think is could have been an SU, but was unsure if/which markets may have used one....
whos setup was this???? wot type of supercharger is it??
Quote: |
In doing some homework for my turbo I discovered the SU was a pretty common and suitable carb for use in a draw thru set up....hence why I bought
one.
None of these are mine but just pics i've collected
Another one and a different pic of the red oval

See Josh.... It can be done....
Build your engine super mild, fit a little turbo cam such as the TCS10, if you can CW the crank and balance the heck out of everything. Flow the heads
a bit (just clean them up yourself... Makes a huge difference!). Copper head gaskets, quality S/S valves (and go a little bigger on the exhaust if you
can), bodge up an exhaust out of what ever you can find and bolt it up!...
Sounds simple when you say it fast!
It can be done mate, don't you worry, it will be fun and fairly cheap if you buy well. Keep the boost low and the draw through set-up will be loads
of fun. Dunno how long it will last, dunno what sort of power you can expect (50% increase potentially?.. it depends on so many things), but just
imagine the smiles!... Some of the guys on the Shoptalk Forums maybe a good resource there.... And of course you have Nick (Boostn) on AVD as a great
resource also...
Maybe I should do that to my spare 1776 donk..... Hmmm.... I have all the parts I need.... Hmmmmm
i'm fairly new turbos but i decided to build up one just for the expeirince a while bacl
just built it outta junker parts and did it all myself cost abit under a grand
it was a solex DIS32 carb from a turbo lazer and a toyota ct12 turbo i just butchered up an exhaust system to suit
worked fairly well on a standard 1600 spare i got till the wastegate jammed
but didnt seem to work as well on my good 1600 even tho its got some head work
think it was the engle cam disagreeing
also had some detonation probs sometimes
i gave up and sold it and i'm gonna build a better one shortly using a t25 and a weber
