VWMA - Heathcote or South Coast Raceway
VWMA Editor - April 19th, 2007 at 08:31 PM

Hi Guys,

Discussion has arisen (well, more like gentle, constant pressure) for VWMA to host a drag race weekend in Victoria, in late February, early March. The plan would be to have two dedicated Volkswagen only drag meets, Victoria at the beginning of the year and Warwick at the end. If the drags can be brought back to the Nationals, this could possibly give Volkswagen racers three events on the calendar.

There are some concerns:

• VW Warwick can probably begin to cover its running costs from this year on, but the danger of introducing a second event is splitting the field (ie smaller entries to each event), which will effectively 'can' both events. Also sponsors may not wish to be involved in both events, which makes it tougher on the bottom line.

• 1/4 or 1/8th for Victoria? Again, I prefer 1/8th for these events as they keep the competition tight, encourage first timers to give it a go, and South Coast Raceway are really keen to host an all Volkswagen event. If the VW Nationals comes back with the drags, then this could cover the 1/4 mile junkies.

• And, more importantly, will their be enough racers with deep pockets and time off work to travel to all three events

The VW scene, especially the racing, is really pumping again. In theory it looks great to have two (possibly three) events for VW drag racers, but the logistics might knock it on the head.

Could the forum moderators please construct a poll?

Two questions:
1.Can the VW drag racing scene support another dedicated event in Victoria?
2.1/4 or 1/8th?

Cheers
Craig

Bugger....Craig I tried a double poll with two questions but it didn't work. I might have to figure out another way.

An event in Victoria would attract people from SA and even Victoria that could never get to Warwick.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for trying. Maybe just the feedback will be useful.

Cheers
Craig

We have a VW only drag day booked at Heathcote on the 9th June. ====>>> http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=61908

Will be a good litmus test of the level of support down here. We are a month and a half away from the day and have about 15 comfirmed entries. Cumon Vics and SA peeps. sign up.:)

Craig

I was looking on the map again n the Portland track would be about another 4 hours drive for the Sydney people to get to..

VWFREAK - April 20th, 2007 at 08:08 PM

Wakefields, closer for me, but if it has to be Melbourne, Calder Park rocks. Cool church too.

I vote GOOD IDEA ! Craig, South Coast Raceway gets my
vote to! Track has very good track(allways getting updated) and friendly people ,and supports ANDRA members ! Always help if they want you there.

Heathcote track has few problems (bumps and traction poor). Maybe this can be fixed with good tack prep!

ALL so don't forget about WA poeple ,lot closer then Warwick.
All so Sydney now can look at drag racing again at VW Nats ? They don't need a stand alone type meeting (cost)
they might work in with Sports Compact people (Ray Box )as a few vw's are all ready racing there or Test & Tune day or Bracket meet ?

Firstly you really need to get some definates from clubs re participation from not only spectators but also competitors. All well and good for people to say "ahh yeah we'll come" cause we all know that it will amount to a lot of now shows at the last minute. I personally don't want to see a meeting like Warwick jepardised by attempting to hold another one unless there can be some serious sponsorship from the volkswagen community in the local area and not just a handful of racers to make it happen.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to see more events like this but I've seen this sort of thing happen even with businesses who try to go too big too quick and end up losing everything. Perhaps a few of the businesses can get together and organise a planning comittee to liase with Craig on how best to bankroll an event in Vic to make it successful like Warwick is becoming so that those from Vic, SA and WA can have an event without the long drive up here to Warwick.

The only reason Warwick is working is through the support it has got from the professional racers and the volkswagen clubs and businesses as a whole.

Without all of the above mentioned groups it simply wouldn't happen....

NSW is a good gig, the best track and fairly central. But as Dave has said VERY expensive.

QLD is a big ask for the people in SA, but still some come (cool)

VIC is also fairly central like NSW, better for SA but not for QLD.

Calder sux hard, the track has not been prepped in ages and it is very expensive to get for the day.

Heathcote has a few bumps in lane 2 but after the finish line. This is the same lane as Aus FASTEST VW has gone, 151mph so it can't be that bad!!
the track gets prepped all the time and the first 60ft is concrete.
A recent back to back test showed that there is not much in the 60ft times between wizard and Heathcote.
1.24 60ft at Wizard on a big meet with a prepped track
1.26 60ft at Heathcote two weeks later just at a street meet.

Aus fastest VW @ Heathcote L2
Aus first 10 sec streeter @ Heathcote L2
Aus fastest streeter @ Heatcote L1

This track loves VW's !

Craig
I spoke to Russel (the owner of Heathcote) and if we get 40 cars
we get the track all day to our selves.

If people book and pre pay there is no risk of a non event last minute or a cost to the promoter?

I just had a look at the wakefield park website.

http://www.wakefieldpark.com.au/?pageid=pg113132930edoras

their pic says they have a 900m front straight. I don't know if it's set up for drags, but surely it's worth looking into if it's a fair bit cheaper than WSID. Does anyone know if it would be usable?

vw54 - April 24th, 2007 at 02:08 PM

It used to be set up for Drags but they have closed it for that application since WSID opened. Part of the deal with the management of WSID

pete wood - April 24th, 2007 at 03:00 PM

that's a bit of a shame. Goulburn's a nice little spot.

just thinking out loud, but what about a triple challenge type thing to get around the rule. hillclimb saturday day, observation rally saturday night (points for getting answers right not speed), 8th mile drags on sunday. like a mini dutton rally type of thing. that way you could compete in any or all of the events and it's club event style of thing instead of a dedicated drag event. street cars would love the observation rally too. surely they couldn't say no to that could they?
