a 1500/1600 is cheaper than a turbo setup. it will also last longer.

sorry to rain on your parade, but i figure you want the truth.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - May 24th, 2007 at 05:53 PM

Prolly a cheaper way is go to say a 1641 but use the single port heads with say a single 40mm weber. Done this a lot and they will get down and pull and very low rpm. not a big revver but offroad you don't really want that.

aussiebaja - May 24th, 2007 at 06:11 PM

come on guys ,i can buy and rebuild a secondhand turbo and fit it myself and pipework and manifolds for half the price of a decent 1600 engine ,what would be a good size for a standard 1200 ,please anyone

I've got a T2 off a nissan pulsar on the TAT turbo. You wouldn't want to go any bigger than that.

bajachris88 - May 24th, 2007 at 06:19 PM

2nd hand turbo's at the wreckers start at $250 when i inquired last week...

only major cost is time...

aussiebaja - May 24th, 2007 at 06:23 PM

im watching a few on ebay ,just hoping i can be lucky and get a easy rebuild or theres some that were just changed so the owners could upgrade ,

I think you'll find that by the time you bend up the exhaust, weld everything up, get a carbie fitted and fit a larger oil cooler (which you will need), it is actually cheaper to buy a decent 2nd hand 1600. If you look around I think you'll find a 1600 for as little as $300, which is much cheaper than a turbo setup for your 1200. Once you have the 1600 in the car, THEN TURBO that motor. Or buy a 1600 which needs a freshen up and build it with the purpose of using the turbo. You might even get a worn 1600 for nicks if you look hard enough.

Coz you won't be satified with the 1200 for long, even with the turbo. Sell your 1200 off to some guys who are into early cars. 1200s are becoming harder to find parts for and so are worth dollars.;)

It would want to be a very strong 1200. I'd definatly have all the valves in the head replaced with new ones, as i've seen too many exhaust valves fail from normal metal fatigue, let alone what will happen to the poor suckers when they are glowing red from the extra heat the turbo will make for them.

The turbo you want is called a GT1752. They are from a SAAB 2.3lt 6 cylinder, and run from the first 3 cylinders only (1.3lt of exhaust flow). The have been used with good success on the 1.1lt charade's from what I hear. This is as large as you want to go. It would make boost from about 2200 rpm, full boost by about 2500.

If you want a lot more low end torque i'd be looking at a GT15 or even a GT12 turbo.

The Nissan EXA T2 is WAY too large for a 1200, especially for offroad use IMO.

Expect to spend some $$$ on this project. Turbo's aren't cheap or simple.

Still interested? I have one a new GT1752 forsale for $350. Its brand new. I was going to use two of these on my engine, but decided to go larger again.

Cheers,
Ian

fuel presssure reg + fuel pump + oil cooler + bigger fuel lines + oil lines and fittings + all materials to do it = $$$. Buy a 1600.
A turbo 1200 is a waste of time IMO, T54

kroozzn63 - May 25th, 2007 at 02:02 PM

yeah but help her do it ,and as she progresses then help her do it in a 1600 etc all the way to a 2332 efi intercooled baby

aussiebaja - May 25th, 2007 at 05:11 PM

thanx guys ,i just cant find anything around this ara from tamworth to armidale to gunnedah ,thats worth paying what people want for them ,,,the cheapest ive found is a 1500 that needs a full rebuild and they still wanted $400 for it ,,,,

2443TT - May 25th, 2007 at 05:23 PM

I'm thinking source a 1600 single port and build the engine up out of the car. Make it all 100% and keep the 1200 as your backup engine. Wibble off this forum can help you out with a side draft 40 IDF webber that is in perfect condition that would make an ideap carb for a pull through turbo arrangement. Send him a U2U.

There is a bunch of "turboing a stock 1600" threads on the http://www.shoptalkforums.com  forum in the forced induction section that are worth a read. They have made some pretty reasonable power too for what is essentially stock engines. Enough to rival a built 1916 NA engine and then some.

Aah, all clear now...back to the turbo 1200.

pete wood - May 25th, 2007 at 07:44 PM

I was just thinking, why not find a cactus late type 3 (wagon is best) and buy that for a few hundred dollars. Then you get all the IRS components you need for a real Baja, plus a 1600 with twin carbs that you can convert to upright (or leave as is, it's a Baja after all). The discs on the front can be machined so they will fit king and link pin and the drums late drums can go on the back. The brake upgrade means an instant ok from the engineer when you get it done. You have everything you need to have a great baja. If you want to turbo it later then you can do that too.

aussiebaja - May 25th, 2007 at 09:34 PM

ok guys ill put a swap add in the for sales and see what i come up with ,if i get nothin ill stick with the 1200 and have a little play ,i spose thats all i can try ,,,thanx guys

Midlife crisis - May 27th, 2007 at 09:03 PM

Hi peoples

I have seen Type 3 and Type 4 motors in standard set up running in a BAJA and Buggys.

Marc

Caroneten - May 28th, 2007 at 07:13 PM

I wouldn't run a type 3 setupas the motor will run hot. I have experienced this. So speaking from experience

BJ

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - May 28th, 2007 at 07:24 PM

Upright a Type 3 donk as their standard cooling system is notorious for running hot on the side with the oil cooler from memory.
