hi
Im interested in building a drag beetle and was wondering what engine combos you have and times and price, who built it etc?

That is a tough question to answer.
Perhaps do a search using the words you said as key-words.
In short, you can race anything from 25hp right up to ...
And the same goes for dollars,
but even then you can build an engine that does the job for a given amount,
or you can spend more, and go NO quicker(sometimes slower due to extra weight/strength),
buy using better quality equipment that will last longer and hold their value better.
A classic example is cases.
A Pauter or Autocraft case makes no more power than say a stock case, but lasts longer and holds all the parts in place better.

Some times nice equipment does nothing for performance,
but will outlast the rest of the car and give you better piece of mind.

Where are you !(city) .If you are close to other vw drag people ,go and see them and talk !!! get out to the track when you know that some one is racing.
How fast do you want to go!!!!!! if you haven't got the know how ,there are some good guys around that could help!
Start slow and build up some experience?
You could build a cool ride(race car) for about $10.000 to $15.000

I'm sure guys will be happy to provide some advice regarding what engine size/combo they have used and what sort of times etc.....cost is always a bit of taboo with most things in life including vw drag racing. I know I'd be reluctant to come and say exactly how much I have spent/will spend on my current engine/gearbox combo, but some would be happy to provide that info.

I guess once you have an idea of parts involved in a particular combo, you will be able to get a good idea of costs involved.

I have no 1/4 mile times on my intended combo so I can't really give you much advice. Hopefully later in the year it will be a different story though.

tubo package will cost around 10-15k

You can do it cheaper, but like Dave B said it's about making them live, and that's what costs.

We must of scared the poor bloke!!!!!
You can build a safe car and fast enough to have a good time.To run large drag meetings you have to run 13sec 's and faster.A gutted street bug and close ratio gearbox with a good small cc motor(1915) will run quick enough to start with .
Even good second hand parts can work ,just think about condition and maybe have parts check by a pro!
We all can't aford 10-15k for a motor but you will build parts up over time .
Unless you are real ethusiast person a fast real type drag car ,is alot of work . Like I said start small and if you like it then build a mega fast car ! What vw drag cars do like ?
