Hello i am new to the drag racing scene and have a few questions if anyone could help. I would like to build a street car to run mid 11s N/A. Was wondering what hp output would i need to produce these times. Also what would the weight be roughly of a 1969/70 model bug after it has been modified engine wise. Any help would be much appreciated. Also have been checking out aussie dubs such as dave butlers and rod richardsons and was just curious as to whether what horsepower these are producing at the wheels. cheers
lets start with about 250hp, and correctly tweaked / setup chassis / gearbox.
It is hard to say what weight your bug would be because of all the
extras and such that you might want to add for strength and saftey.
But just for interest, my bug is currently 1775lbs (807kg),
and I think Rods was about 1750lbs (795kg) before his new roll cage.
Dave Becker's car was around 1850lbs (841kg) from memory
This includes the drivers, so I would guess yours to be around this unless it is a lightened drag car.
With my best speed of 118.2mph the engine was making just under 229hp and about 199 at the wheels.
With Rods best speed of 112 mph, I would guess it to have around 192 hp and 167 at the tyres.
This is on Dyno-Dynamics brand dynos in shoot-out mode,
and are 'corrected' figures.
I think Beckers was/is around 143hp at the wheels.
Awsome thanks guys for your help. So do you think it would be possible for a normal nonlightened bug (1969/70) to get into the 11 second time bracket with about 200 hp at the wheels?
Yeah, I reckon it will do it no worries.
Is yours the orange one?
lol yeah it is just didnt really wana say too much. It is mine and my dads. Was just asking a few questions from the pros as i am new to it all and was just getting advice to see if it was possible to get my goal of 11s. Was just unsure if the weight of the car would hold me back. Anyhow thanks for your help once again.
I would love to hear some details of your car and its previous combinations.
As would other drag racing VW guys.
I could just ring Mike, but he would probably check with you first anyhow.
What did it make at the wheels,
and what other details like tranny and suspension does it have?
Any pics?(if pics are trouble, emailthem to me and I can post them).
Hello again. Well we did have a 2276cc with 44 idfs which was quite potent but we did not have the tranny hardware to give it a hard run. It was an
awsome engine to begin with but decided we wanted to go faster. So we went with this final combination. 2442cc with 51.5 IDAs ( 52s maybe), cb comp
eliminators 48x40, 88mm Bugpack flanged crank, 94mm AA performance pistons, FK89, Pauter Rockers. These are just a few specs from the top of my head.
We had the gear ratios changed with a 3.88. Not sure on the exact gear ratios. When on the dyno she produced 199.5 hp atw on pump gas and full exhaust
with more still to come. The car is fully registered and our goal was to have a street car to run 11s. Just to give it to alot of the japanese sports
cars. Narrowed front and shorter rear axles and all neccessary parts to push it hard. As yet we do not have any photos but will try get some soon.
Mike built our last motor and again with this one. Mike has done an unbelievable job and always thinks outside the square. Full credit to Mike and
staff we are very happy and cant wait to see what it runs.
Its great to see your race car and what can be achieved. Hope to see and meet u at a meeting some time.
I'm fairly sure Adam Deb's been into the 11's with his old 1915 Turbo motor.
awsome what power did he have to do that
Also Peter Page drove Rod's car to an 11.96 with less power than it has now.
I think mid to low elevens are quite achievable on slicks.
Look forward to meeting you also.
Thats great, was hoping to hear that. Now i just need to get a set of slicks and hopefully produce some of these 11 second times. cheers

11.88 @ 110mph on a 33 degree day, not the best temps for racing. It made 220hp on the treads.
The car was fairly stripped inside and no bumpers, no back seat, 3" weld wheels on the front and slicks made for a pretty light car.
Wish I got to go for a ride before it was turned into a classic race car.

Well airkewld, please let us know when you are heading out to WSID to try it out.

how did you guy's go.
Hey well my orange beast managed a 12.5 with muffler and et streets however top gear was a bit tall ( as we wanted this for street use). This will be now changed to get the mph up and hopefully et down. This time was produced after 2nd pass ever! Was very fun night blowin the doors off most cars. If Deans around i will let him let u guys know how he went.
Gotta tell us the speeds also at 1/2 track and the end.
Awesome effort for first time out.
87.6mph and 103.75mph
that's pretty cool, what about the finer details,60 ft.half track and miles.
i was going to bring out the shitter for a laugh, but i had to much work on.
next time you are going out i would love to come and watch some vw's kickin ass,so keep us posted.

Yeah dammm that sucks. Hopefully soon u will get a good hard run out of her as there is plenty left in her also i believe. Yeah we were happy with the overall result of the night but hopefully we get more out of it yet as well. Will speak to u soon
