8mm chromoly keepers?? anyone have any?
Dasdubber - August 7th, 2007 at 03:31 PM

My heads are at the reco shop at the moment having the seats recut and getting them ready for dual springs....however when I ordered all my other parts I forgot the chromoly keepers (stock 1800 type IV valves - triple lock) and therefore need some before he finalises the head work.

Does anyone have any available? Unfortunately Rod P's next shipment is a few weeks away.....I know the stock ones may suffice, but since I have gone with chromoly retainers etc, figured may as well upgrade now.

Maybe even someone locally (not vw related?) may have them - any leads are appreciated.

I just got Darrel Yates 2 sets Alan,
I may be able to steal a set back,
and they can be replaced as long as they are Bergs the same.
Perhaps make an order with some other stuff to ease the freight ream.

Check with Boris at Vintage he has some sets 02-9789-1777

how come your using dual springs ??? pretty heavy

Thanks guys - I got a set of scat ones from vintage. Thanks for the offer of help Dave and Daimo.

Dave, dual springs - bit of overkill for current cam and combo, but I guess I am setting myself up for the next rebuild down the track when I intend to go stroker etc etc.

Every VW should have dual springs in my book.
At least a damper in there anyhow.
Even waterboxers had them with a stock cam, so any extra RPM or boost keeping the valves from their seat will benefit.
Your valve job will last way better to due to better control.

Just run the cam in with singles first.

yeah i think running the cam in is the key the duals tend to rip into the cam and start excessive wear

We have gone back to the singles heavy duty and check each spring tension to have them equal on the drag car they stay shut even with the boost

Yeah the intention was always to run singles for break in.

In terms of spring pressure, of course every application is different, but are there any guidelines to go on? The head shop is asking what spring pressures I want to run before he finishes machinging etc (dave - I ended up going to abbotts up at southport).

Cool Alan,
Robbie will do a nice job.

Depends on a lot of things, but if it were me I would set up the springs at 1.5mm from bind.
You will need to know ACTUAL lift.
If you want I can help do the final shimming .
Otherwise do a 'theoretical lift' and only go 2.5mm from bind as a precaution.
