westi - June 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 PM
i am always amazed at how much knowledge one man can hold in ones head.and dave as everyone will agree is pretty amazing with his vast knowlegde of
all things volksy.
can we stump him.
i am not sure ,but will give it a go,but i will have to go home and sleep on it.as i am drawing a blank at the moment.
if anyone has something please have a go.
i have a little one but it is pretty easy.

matberry - June 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Cmon Westi, you'll have to do better than that to stump Dave.
westi - June 2nd, 2008 at 11:41 PM

where was the bonnet pull knob on a 1969 beetle?
what did a 1969 beetle have that no others had?
hint: something to do with the heaters...
why are 1968 beetle wiper arms different from any other model beetles?

how did u go with THAT important phone call any progress

I think we need to stump Dave with vw performance related questions though rather than just general vw questions.
Not that this will stump you Dave, but I know you are not overly fond of the K8 cam (there is a topic in another section you've already replied to)
due to risk of valve train wear/harmonics.....looks like a K8 cam has been chosen and already dropped into the case for my turbo engine, can you
elaborate on this a little?
I'm unsure of the origin (engle/cb performance etc as you mentioned there can be some differences in the k8 grind). Rockers will be Pauter 1.3,
manton dual taper pushrods.....I'm keen to learn more!

My K 8, 914 engine was built in 95, with GB273a springs set to .100" off coil bind. I think I bought it from KSR so maybe Pauter or European in
origon. Saw 7000 rpm often enough, and worked f'n hard over the years, and never a spring issue.

After seeing a number of customers with type one K8's have rocker arm, stud and pushrod failures, we had a K8 checked by our cam guy.
His simulation software showed that it had harmonic issues
that caused the failures and it was aggrivated by:
extra lash when warm,
rocker ratios that are large.
high rpm.
I can not recall if it was a Berg Equivalent,
or Engle genuine cam,
but our cam guy was able to reprofile the lobe to solve the problem.
We ordered a CB version of the K8, and it tested fine.
In the past I was not a real CB fan, but they have really done their homework of late, to supply the markets demands.
Pauter's would have been their own profile that had similar specs,
and their products are excellent in my opinion, (as you can tel by my purchases).
Provided the lash is kept tight(zero cold),
and the rocker ratio is kept on the low side of 1.4 you should be fine(if you like low power n/a )
Of note was that extra tention did not solve the issue,
infact the damage was more severe, when the valvetrain lost control.

sorry that was to general,i ment technical as in performance questions or close .
ie.what should roller rockers be shimmed too.etc.etc.
not what head light fits these models.67 68 69 and what is the part number,
even theory questions like.how long is a piece of string.lol
hopefully you get the idea.

I don't work for anyone any more.
I am an unemployed bum
that walks the earth, and gets into adventures, (just like Cane off 'Kung-Fu'),
....but I like to experiment with mind expanding drugs
all the while, having wild unprotected sex with many anonymous partners.
But you can purchase all sorts of simulation programs these days.
This one is my favourite:

Too easy Brenndan
Does the longer conrod favour torque or revs while improving or not, engine longevity?
You there Birch...?????

Ok Dave ['s]
With a late beetle engine bay, and dual 48 IDA's on scat manifolds, I was wondering how far I can raise the engine and trans before I have
interference problems?????
westi - June 4th, 2008 at 10:39 AM
nice one.
but is there ever interference problems.not for me.
