FK87 Experiences ?
55slug - August 20th, 2008 at 04:54 PM

I am going to be running one in the 2442 Im building. I was planning on running 10.5:1 compression.

Just interested to hear of any combos anyone has run and their take on this cam ? Ive read that it likes compression, but how much ? trying to keep it semi streetable.

Combo is 88 x 94, 044 wedgeports 46 x 37, IDAs and 1 3/4 exhaust. FK87.

Love it.
Depending on a few factors it comes on at around 4000.(like a two stroke bike)
Prob advance it a little and hope your highway RPM does not coincide with where it "comes on"

It will work well with that comp.

Rod Richardson has that in his engine with 1.4's.

hi, i ran one in a 2180, 48s, 11.5 comp, on the street, and it was nice. smooth power and streetable, came on hard at 5000rpm

Got one in my 2332, 44x38, 1.4's [.585"], 48's, 9.5 : 1. Smooth as all the way from idle to redline.
Sorry Dave, but comes on a bit earlier in my combo, about 3300.
Love it !!

Rocker ratio, port size and venturi size can be factors.

Smaller 'amounts' will move the start point earlier but will limit outright power.

Im running a fk89 in a 2007 with 1.4s with 10.5.1
heads are 42x37.5 power comes on at 4400 all the to 8200 but i think with these sort of cams ()high lift) you have to get your gearbox ratios right ...

what revs is the redline ?

westi - August 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 PM

why such a small cam.lol
i haven't run that cam but it sound's like a good combo.
playing around with cam timing and carby's will get it doing what ever you want it to.
everyone's idea of streetable is different.
my combo is loverly on the street, but it's proberly no good for the next guy.

Box is a 1.21 4th with 4.12 r and p, 215/65 15 tyres. It will be at about 4000 rpm at 100k. Sounds like im going to have to break the law or drive like a granny.

hellbugged - August 23rd, 2008 at 11:02 PM

from the berg catalouge...........

"For large cc engines with GB 870 or larger heads, 48 IDA's and 1-5/8" or larger exhaust. Can be for an extra hot street car that has close ratio gears or one of our 5 speeds. Not quite an all out race cam. Used in some mini stock or road racecars. 320 duration, 0.390" lift at cam."

Sick68VW - August 24th, 2008 at 02:13 PM

my 4th gear is a 1.33 with a 4.125 it revs high on the high way but awesome round the streets.

westi - August 24th, 2008 at 05:08 PM

Sick68VW - August 24th, 2008 at 07:02 PM

What lifters are you guys using for your type 1 engines thats compatible with the engle, cams, everytime i buy one i have to source my own lifters, with the type 4 cams i get matched lifters included with the cam.

Damo.

matberry - September 20th, 2008 at 08:22 PM

matberry - September 7th, 2009 at 05:49 PM

A few questions first

What type of driving...full race, partial race, hot street, mild street??
What octane of fuel is available there?
What type of maintenance schedule are you up to?
What expected hp are you after?
How many miles are you expectingting it to last?
What fuel economy are you expecting?
What car, gear ratios and cooling system?

reub - September 7th, 2009 at 06:16 PM

I look forward to experiencing the FK87 myself:tu:

matberry - September 7th, 2009 at 06:24 PM

Ask Coletrickle what he thinks of the 2332 with fk87. With the right package they are a great cam

coletrickle - September 7th, 2009 at 08:22 PM

I've had my 2332 Matt Berry engine in the car for about 5weeks now,fk87,9.8-1,48,s man i absolutely love it!It idles at 800rpm and drives slow so good,it's like the best tuned stocker you've ever driven with 141hp@w!Merges like a motorbike runs real cool on 98 octane had 9 runs at the drags all in the 13's.It's nice and quiet at idle but since "COL LOOK" is all about speed it's stripped out and it's pretty loud inside at 100/3400rpm.So far i'm over the moon with my new engine and box in fact if anybody is intrested in a ride if i make it to warrick come and see me.

matberry - September 7th, 2009 at 08:34 PM

Ah Haa. Ask and you shall receive.
Cheers Col, couldn't have said it better:tu:

matberry - September 7th, 2009 at 08:43 PM

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - September 7th, 2009 at 09:28 PM

Can't see why it should. Col is stating his opinion on "someone's" handywork and is happy with his experience!!
