20b n/a splitwindow bus & 20bt bay
20bkombi - April 18th, 2009 at 09:45 PM

Just bought 56? splity for my new race car.
This will be a slow build as you would expect, and thinking of starting n/a 20b, yep my current trusty bridge port minus the turbo, but running on alcohol.
Time to bring out the old 091 4speed box, not the best ratios but should be up to the task because this set up won't have much power using the original plenum and throttle body. Should be loads of fun having a purpose built drag car insted of a street/race car.

I'm still racing in Thomas at warwick this year but using pump fuel, and 7-10 pounds of boost.:sniffle:

Hear are some pic's, from to day, can't wait to get it home to start working on it.
:D

colonel mustard - April 18th, 2009 at 09:50 PM

Nice!!!

20bkombi - April 18th, 2009 at 10:09 PM

Hi Al, it's only fare to finish the type 3, as i already have a vw or two that go. The splitty can wait a little, but still have to start to plan the drive line, roll cage, ect. (wheels, stearing wheel,,,,yeah everything)
I'm thinking 2010

555bug - April 18th, 2009 at 10:13 PM

nice, i shouldmhave an ej20t bug by then so that would be a cool run :) best of luck with the build.
Stephen

RISKYBUG - April 19th, 2009 at 02:45 PM

hehehehe looks like fun
i love you other kombi mate :tu:

typethreeking - April 19th, 2009 at 05:09 PM

Aaron, looks the goods, with the weight difference between the bay and the split the n/a 20b should still go pretty well but still cant wait to see the finished project when it turbo and a nice 800hp, should make a interesting ride!!Make sure becks t3 is ready for warwick, the grudge run is on!!

vassy66T1 - April 19th, 2009 at 05:54 PM

Aaron that will be very cool!!

Are you going the whole hog and tubbing the rear for some big slicks and dumps it on its guts ... whatever you do I am sure it will be an excellent result

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - April 19th, 2009 at 09:20 PM

Mate now I will have to get some more funds to buy some bigger go fast bits seeing as you are going to get lighter LOL

All motor.... bay vs split....... VW vs Rotary........

dangerous - April 20th, 2009 at 01:23 PM

"this set up won't have much power using the original plenum and throttle body"

Apparently that dude with the 9.4 second A/M mazda down south uses the stock manifold. (!)

colonel mustard - April 20th, 2009 at 06:51 PM

I belive there are people who port the stock manifolds with good results. :) thats what I've heard on the mazda streets

20bkombi - April 20th, 2009 at 10:27 PM

I'm guessing a nut or nut bag is good??

Finally got the bus home to meet the vw family,
As usual it needs more work than i first thought, thats ok, I'm still excited. I think the youre right , the rear end will be the largest amount of work. I have about 4 designes that im working on. The motor and box will have to be able to be removed seperatly, but still will be tied in to the rollcage as well as the torsion beam. Thinking coilovers insted of previous air bags so i can adjust the spring rate. Dangerous has a pare of 28 x 9 slicks that i may use which should fit under the guards.
Picking up a 68 front end and the old box and axels tommorrow. Only the front end will be used with a disk brake up grade. Rear will have disks to.

The mazda 'sheriff' has run 9.4s on alcahol, but is a p/p and has aftermarket plenum and a single 3.5 - 4 inch throttle, making around 400rwhp. I will port the 20b manifold in this engine, un like the current 20b turbo that i left stock.
There is heaps of alloy that can be removed from the upper and lower manifolds, Ive done this with my old 13bt setup.
I guess that it slould make around 300hp
Brennden, we should swich buses then your young bus may have a chance,,,, 'big fella':lol:

Hay Troy, Bec said bring it on!!!!

Thanks for the positive feed back guys, being non vw powerd and all, as you are all such vw enthusiasts.:D

colonel mustard - April 20th, 2009 at 10:34 PM

Rota's and VW's... to two favorite automotive things!

colonel mustard - April 21st, 2009 at 06:08 PM

Nice collection. good to see some are still original! Where do you find the space????
Im guessing you work with cars for a living?

Question... isnt a series 4 post 1985?? I thought 84 for still series 3... and I didnt think any aus delivered series 3 were 13bturbo...??? I may be wrong :)

Sorry wrong key, yes your right 86-88 FC series 4

colonel mustard - April 21st, 2009 at 06:35 PM

JMOBFC!!!!!! nice. A year at mazda wasn't a complete waste for me then :)
Id love a rotary beetle... or... an sa22c. too expensive for me. one day though... :) I really respect what you do, its awesome

20bkombi - April 21st, 2009 at 07:31 PM

Gee... thanks Daimo, I would have to say the same for you, and as for the nuts, well,, somethings got to hold the front of the kombi down.

Jason, I have a bouble block 4 car gararge and a 2 bay car port still not enough roofing.

I'm a cabinetmaker by trade, motor homes, 40-60ft cruisers, house hold cabinets and owned a shop for 2 years. I'm self taught for all automotive stuff (and spelling). I've worked at mazfix for 9 months but didn't lern anything new apart from sales. Still doing other engine convertions and rotary rebuilds from home. Also do courier driving.

Why not join the dark side, and make make what you want?

The splittie better be kudos, after all the work i'll do.:D

reub - April 21st, 2009 at 08:26 PM

I'd so love to put a 20b in a bug - maybe mid mounted even... maybe in vwrx even (already have the porsche box in there).

Really like your work dude, particularly the wheel stands in a kombi - something you'd last expect to see them from:tu:

colonel mustard - April 21st, 2009 at 08:43 PM

a 20b is a bug would be INSANE. and scary as anything. look forward to meeting you at warwick this year Aaron. I Took some photos of the black bay last year I think. :)

Dasdubber - April 21st, 2009 at 09:21 PM

Need inspiration?

Not set up for the drags but cool nonetheless.

westi - April 24th, 2009 at 12:28 AM

nice.
always a fan.
but enough with the chit chat, get cutting.
i can't wait to see how this one turns out.

Stanley - April 24th, 2009 at 06:26 AM

Great stuff Aaron. Will look forward to this build up. Hopefully you'll stay with the same colour scheme.
I must admit your bus has made me look at rotors differently.

I even let Ben bring his over now....although it has to stay out of the yard....small steps..

20bkombi - April 27th, 2009 at 08:05 PM

Sorry readers, I'm not alowed to spend much time or money on the bus until i've finished bec's type3 and done some more on the house renovations. So I laid tiles for two days and worked on the type3. Still working on my brothers 78 bay , EJ20 convertion, 2L auto ect.

I'll have to sort all running gear, tyre hight, body hight, wheel track front and rear, engine/box position, fuel tank position, rollcage, suspension location, all has to be done befor i start work. I don't want to redo much on this on this bus, unlike the last one. Want to plan for future upgrades, if posible.
I love different ideas so don't be afraid to post them up.

Thats a very tough looking bus alan. One of the best i've seen, pity it's not for the drags.

Thinking of mat green and mat cream on top, stock front rims cream, a bit retro, mabe???
Stanley, glad to see your comming around. Hows your son's kombi going? Send him round and we'll bolt on what's missing:lol: I'll have to see his set up, and go for a spin.

vassy66T1 - April 27th, 2009 at 08:55 PM

I'd like to think that a later upgrade might even include a blown big block Rodeck ... I'd like to see a 7sec pass out of a splittie.
You can't have too much speed!

20bkombi - April 27th, 2009 at 09:28 PM

7's are still posible with a rotary, but that's to fast for me. Only looking for high 10's to start then someware around 9's later. Shame on you!, v8?? rotary:love:

colonel mustard - April 27th, 2009 at 09:38 PM

way too fast.... but cool as.
