WSID 07/07/10.......It finally broke !
Craig Torrens - July 8th, 2010 at 03:12 PM

Well I did a nice 2nd gear 8000rpm "tire warmer"...........moved up to the start line........and on the green (well maybe amber !!) side stepped it at about 7000rpm..............and BANG !!!

Hmmmmm a gearbox full of neutrals .......and a nice clunk sound when you release the clutch.:fakesniff:

I guess after 15 years and over 1000 launches something in the drivetrain had to let go !

So I loaded it up on the trailer (glad I trailered it there) and I can now grab the drivers side axle and move it up and down on the gearbox end. Here's hoping its just a smashed CV and not the Quaife !!!

BeetleJuice - July 8th, 2010 at 03:18 PM

Surely it wouldn't be the Quaife!

matberry - July 8th, 2010 at 03:30 PM

Bummer dude.
My bet, diff output shaft.....done a few of them over the years :). Don't know Quaife's but I bet it's a vw part, not the diff.

1303Steve - July 8th, 2010 at 03:42 PM

Hi

If your running bug output shafts they are the weak link, I broke one through my own stupidity.

Steve

Craig Torrens - July 8th, 2010 at 03:58 PM

I think it will be the cage in the CV that holds the balls that has let go........I will have a look on Saturday :tu: or maybe tonight if it stops raining !

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - July 8th, 2010 at 05:00 PM

Get some photos of the damage, would love to see what can happen to a box when been used properly.

dangerous - July 8th, 2010 at 05:34 PM

It'll just be a CV.

vw54 - July 8th, 2010 at 05:34 PM

the joys of Drag racing

reub - July 8th, 2010 at 05:38 PM

Hmm... all the hard launches - or more power?

trickysimon - July 8th, 2010 at 06:43 PM

You might need 1 of those 5-Bar kits. I hear they stop gearbox's breakings. ;)

HS618 - July 8th, 2010 at 07:26 PM

Sorry to hear Craig. Unfortunately, drive line fractures do happen. (I reckon I need psyciatric counceling to get over the number of "fractures" I've incurred over the years) so don't feel too bad
Not having been there, be careful when doing burnouts, not to continue the burnout very far past the water. The track gets very grippy at that point (about 2 to 3 metres past the water). in some cases, the traction there is actually better than the start line.
I don't know if Dave will agree, but I believe that many start line failures begin just out of the burnout box and before the start line - especially if you hear the tyres "squeak" during the burnout when driving hard out of the water. The launch just finishes it off

matberry - July 8th, 2010 at 07:39 PM

^^^ interesting theory Henry.

And to think I enjoy hearing that last part of the burn out, especially with a squeak :).

HS618 - July 8th, 2010 at 07:46 PM

Matt, it always sounds better when it isn't your own!!

Craig Torrens - July 8th, 2010 at 08:04 PM

Henry....you've hit the nail on the head, because last night I went well past the water area.

I always try to listen for the squeak.........I was actually showing a mate last night (when I became a spectator!) what to listen for when doing a burnout.

Ah well thats motorsport ;)

LOWBUG - July 8th, 2010 at 08:35 PM

Did you really side step the clutch at 7000 rpm, wow thats huge what tyres were you using?

Craig Torrens - July 8th, 2010 at 09:28 PM

yep.....I haven't really learnt to do a good drag launch yet, so I prefer to give it heaps of revs and just side step. That's why I bought a Go Pro camera so I could get some incar footage of revs !!!

I had the BFGoodrich T/A road tyres on,they are a 15inch 205/65 series......I think about 25.5 inch Dia.

You will have to bring that quick bug of yours out again, maybe we head out in 2 weeks ?

LOWBUG - July 9th, 2010 at 07:47 PM

Happy to, a bit hard to predict what I'm doing that far down the track, will you have gear box sorted by then?

Craig Torrens - July 9th, 2010 at 11:05 PM

Hopefully its just the CV, I will get time tomorrow to have a look...............otherwise I wont have a gearbox ready by then, unless I run a stock one !!

Craig Torrens - July 10th, 2010 at 02:06 PM

well it was what I thought.....the cage that holds the balls in the CV is in a million pieces.

so time for some new CV's all round I think !

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - July 10th, 2010 at 03:38 PM

So when will you be back at WSID next cause i wanna come watch some beetles race.

matberry - July 10th, 2010 at 07:08 PM

Lucky you...easy fix :)

Craig Torrens - July 10th, 2010 at 08:33 PM

Yes..........always good to have the CV's act like a 'fuse'

Craig Torrens - July 14th, 2010 at 06:22 PM

well at least I have one photo from the night.......looks like more smoke on the right side, the side that went bang.

Craig Torrens - July 14th, 2010 at 06:26 PM

make that two !

Interesting to see how not all the tyre is 'black' from the burnout (outer edge untouched).........I'm still running camber from the hillclimb days, so I think that needs to be change so ALL the tyre is being used....that and maybe lower tyre pressures!
