ian.mezz - July 21st, 2010 at 03:52 PM

I read some where that The Jamboree event was started in 1991 by a group of Volkswagen drag racing enthusiasts

Question

How many vw drag racers??

Where are they now???

Are the cars still out there????

Last time I saw the Jamboree there was about 5 vw and 495 ricer cars:crazy:

PS disregard this post if :crazy:It was on here that i saw this before aussieveedubbers:crazy::crazy::crazy:

Yup - definitely started by Volksy guys, and actually grew out of an event that VW Drivers Club of Qld used to run at the old Gold Coast (Surfers?) drag strip.

I think the story was that the event started getting too big for the club (or the usual case of only a few doing all the work) so 2 guys from the club took it on as a business venture. Ray Box was one, and I think Mark Stanbury the other... and it's them that are still running it. Don't think either are Volksy owners these days, but I know Ray is definitely a Volksy dude at heart still (he was at the last Qld Dyno Day for example).

Wally and DB would know all the details for sure... who, when, why etc... and most likely had a hand in it all happening way back when... Brennden and Troy too now that I think about it !!!

I first went to the Jamboree in 93 ( I'm still trying to find the photo's but have got some from 2002) Peter's "awsome" is still my favorite

First year I went was in 1994.... back then there were a lot more VW's, and most of the rotaries were running in the 15's...... I remember watching the HellKombi roast a rotary with a 14 second pass..... surprised a lot of my non vw mates.

mark stanbury has sold his share of the jamboree to ray and yes mark is also a vw freak, he has a early type 3 and will be at nambucca, there were a few guys back in the day like dave butler, peter page, craig brown, darryl yates just to name a few..

My first drag race was against Pete at that event. :)

Ray still puts on the Jamboree. Loves the Volksies although now not sure he owns one. He dropped in up here at christmas.

The very first Jamboree was held at willowbank.
I did all the liasing with the willowbank office at age 21,as a representative for the VW drivers club.
Peter Page, ray box, and Mark Stanbury were the co-conspiritors.
The club would not put up the minimum amount,
so I took on the gamble if the entry numbers did no add up to the $1000 or so dollars they wanted, to secure the event.
We got the 50 entrants required($20 each)and the club made a further $900 for the day(their largest ever profit!)

We wanted JUST VOLKSIES, but reality set in and we welcomed some fast fours and rotaries, and one motor bike....and one green 911 that got beeten by a yellow Volksy!!

I hand wrote letters to all the VW dragracers that were still alive,
and the only response I got was a phone call from Peter Keegan, to thank us for the invitation.

Peter Keegan could not make it to the event,
but further discussions with him resulted in me,
purchasing his supercharged hill climb car.
My first pass was a 12.55@103mph at THAT Jamboree.

My first race was by special arrangement with Ray and Mark, they let me run my 911 that I had at the time, only had 2 passes as the clutch didn't lile it. First pass against Pete, with the helmet on and Pete's engine noise I couldn't even hear my engine.....so the next year I wasn't going to put up with that, and had the chop top for it's first time out, although it never ran in anger due to Haltech issues at the dyno the few nights before !!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - July 22nd, 2010 at 10:14 PM

Been to the Jamboree every year except the year when Berg was here(damm cousin's wedding) and i missed 1997 as well due to not having enough money to pay rego on my bus and an entry to race as well. So rego got paid and i sat at home wondering what was happening.

I raced my bus twice at Jamboree in late 90's and in early to mid 90's raced my stock as a rock 1978 honda civic which i also won top original in 1994 and prepped my Dad's civic in 1992 for the show to win top modified sedan/wagon.

Lots of fond memories of past Jambo's - in particular two big burnouts, one by the Hellbug and the other by Brendann's Kombi - I'm sure I have some pre-digital photos somewhere of both!

I've heaps of photo's and vids of all the early stuff (including Hellbugs burnout) but like Al...all pre digital, be buggered if I have the time/know how to get them on here!

Ray may not have a vw anymore but he still has parts in his shed. Everytime I see Mark he is wearing vw shirt.
I have been to all the Jamborees except the first and still enjoy it every year.

As I was typing this Ray just sent a pic of the missus parents in the starters box at Jambo 3.
