Chunks in my gearbox oil. Should I drive to Warwick?
fullnoise - September 25th, 2010 at 11:40 AM

My gearbox feels fine. But on a routine oil change I found these chunks stuck to the magnetic sump plug.

Please help me gearbox boffins? Should I risk driving from Sydney to Warwick, racing and driving home?

Without pulling out the gearbox for a full diagnosis, any idea what's going on (Or should I say coming off) in there?

Thanks. CT

:smilegrin:yeah just drive it....wont get far, so the tow home will be cheap as.
That way you will have another cool story to write up and the fuel and expense money saved can go towards your new zf and five speed!

Oh did i mention the $ exchange is up and bergs are taking deposits on a run of 5 speeds!...i put you down for one

I would be concerned (as you are obviously), and prolbably call off racing on it, but certainly see what the tranny king can diagnose as what the bits actually are.

if you make it here and it goes bang thru the weekend there could be a space in my garage for lack of a better option getting it home straight away :)

-provided the mates trailer is free for the day at least

I can not identify what those parts are from a photo
but there are a lot of them.
Never a good sign when there is so much.
I would not use it at all.

Thanks guys.

I'll leave it at home this year. Bummer.

At least now I've got an excuse the pull the gearbox out and put a 3.88 ring and pinion in it, currently a 4.375, and a ZF.

See Y'all at Warwick, from the grand stand!

not good CT

they look like bits from a bearing cage it may have collapsed but it defiently needs to be pulled and fix before u race again

CT, I think with all your experience you already knew the answer to your own question. And you were really looking for a higher power (DB) to give you a sign that it would stick together .

As we know Qld is higher than NSW and the God (DB) has spoken, just not in your favour :sniffle: and now you wont enjoy the drive up north as much.

I have a bloody wedding to go to on the Saturday night and am even thinking about flying up early Sunday if I can organise it. Not sure if I would fly back or try jumping in with someone that is returning to Sydney?

Mainshaft needle bearing cage maybe.... will be interesting to see when its apart

polak - September 28th, 2010 at 08:53 PM

i agree with the muffin man, pieces are not big but plenty of them.... looks like a bearing cage, or whats left of it.... its a risk getting up there but even bigger risk running it.... although if it does go bang u can tow it to dave and have him whip u up a new one:D

Thanks for the offer of a garage STIDUB. I don't think I'll risk a failure because I don't want to damage my 3 Albins gears. I'd prefer them to stay in good shape, if they've survived, so I can add a ZF to the equation in coming months.

I'll ride with Jak. 10 hours of conversation will go something like this: C'mon Jak race it? Nah, it's my daily driver; remember what happened last year? 15 minutes later. C'mon Jak race it? Nah, it's my daily driver; remember what happened last year? 15 minutes later. C'mon Jak race it? Nah, it's my daily driver; remember what happened last year?

Thanks for the advice guys. The only part of the gearbox I recognize is the gear stick. You may have saved me a very time consuming and possibly expensive vehicle recovery exercise.

I can't with to watch all the new cars, and have a different point of view than the dummy grid.

Now back to pondering my bank balance versus the US exchange rate and the pros and cons of an FK10 cam, Demello Crank and CB Wedge Ports. Something to discuss over a few cans around the puddles at Warwick.
