VW Portland 2011 - Another Great Weekend!
VWMA Editor - December 2nd, 2010 at 04:29 PM
Update: 9th February 2011
Hi All,
Closing date for entries is this Friday 11th February. This closing date also includes numbers for catering on the Saturday night dinner and Sunday
morning breakfast. It's also the last chance to register for the dune buggy day on the Friday.
Thanks again to David Brown, Trades Parts Manager for Volkswagen Genuine Parts, for supplying some neat 2011 Volkswagen merchandise for the drivers
packs. These will be distributed on Friday and on Saturday morning to drivers, along with gate passes, etc.
Yes, the Tappet Cover Racing is definitely a part of the Saturday night entertainment, and I've already been privy to a few new creations. Racing
starts approx 9pm in the SouthCoast clubrooms.
This is the last update, as I will now be busy with paperwork and the buggy, but please feel free to email me with any questions about the weekend.
Cheers
Craig Hughes
Editor/Part-time Drag Racer

You won't be the only one.
Hopefully my mk1 will last long enough for this event.
Got a few test & tunes coming up with the new setup.
Testing the new clutch, the 2-Step again & also my new in-car camera.
2nd gear 2-Step launch/powerskid pedaling it down the road 60+m
I did try it in 3rd, but it needs a much bigger rpm pill to help build boost.

2nd gear roll on

Power run. (I won't post the speed, but anyone who knows there way around a Mk1 speedo will know how fast it wraps around the speedo if you
look closely enough!)

Better keep it in one piece
You haven't seen what we have done with our 8v
and its still running
hopefully we will get our new engine together before Portland otherwise we will have to run the old one which is a little 2nd hand but its doing
consistent 13.2 1/4 mile passes hahaha

I can only imagine what you do with it.
You have to remember, mine is no trailer queened, weekend warrior. Its a full weighted street car covering 500+km week for the daily commute, & it
doesn't get an easy time doing it either. Even with a locked diff too!!!!
Its still running roughly 20psi too, so there is no "race tune" or "street tune".
Hence the "hopefully it will last" comment
Those video's are basically how I drive it. Hard!!!!.
For racing, I only remove the spare, jack & fit a stickier set of front street tyres. So its still a full weighted car.
Its best MPH so far in full street trim has been 101.95mph, so its on par with your drag mk1. Although my 60ft's are still a very lazy 2.2
But I do trailer it to events now, cause everytime I've raced a VW, its broken & I've had to hitch a ride home. Fragile POS'!!!! haha
Funny though, never had a drama racing Aussie cars!!!!
Just last weekend, I drove my ute on a 5hr round trip, raced it, raced it hard & had no dramas.
Should be a good weekend.

great work craig
motha - January 16th, 2011 at 02:59 PM
Registered, paid for & all locked in!!!
Car has been removed from daily driving duties due to a recent 500+hp daily driver ute, which also turns duties as a tow car!
Have since played around with the Golf, wound the mixtures up pig rich along with the boost & now its moving!!!! Can wheel spin shifting into 3rd
on dry hot mix at 80+km/h!!!
We're all booked in at the Portland Holiday Village Villa!!!!
Can't wait!!!!

Sorry to say I wont be there this year.
It is a great week end and atmosphere.
There was a remote chance i would have had my valves by now,(springs arrived today),
but valves wont leave the USA till Friday.
With no dyno time, $, or testing it looks like only Warwick this year.
