Portland Cancelled
sauron - September 3rd, 2011 at 08:25 PM

I have just heard that Portland 2012 has been cancelled, Bit of a bugger, but I don't blame Craig for pulling the pin as we have struggled to get the numbers down here.
I just don't understand, Andrew and I have tried everything to get some interest down here, surely any Volkswagen event is a good thing even if your not into racing, but if cruising and car shows are all they want down here then so be it, the Loco Gringos will go where ever Craig decides to go.

are you sure? That's a pisser. My new engine wont be here for Warwick and I was getting excited as I'll at least have it ready for Portland.

VWMA Editor - September 3rd, 2011 at 09:40 PM

Hi Michael, there is the possibility of new things happening in 2012 with the VW drag racing scene, but I'll let everyone know the final calendar when all is settled. At present nothing has officially changed, but the one thing for certain is that there will at least still be two events in the VWMA series.

This is dissapointing for us Victorians, Portland wasnt really close to anywhere, but with Adelaide back with a track & Craig was talking a Sydney event, maybe its a relocation.
Still dissapointing news.
Like Rose I was hoping to take my car,

Would have been nice if more Victorians had supported Portland, we did ands we travelled further. Yehaa if we get something in sydney, hopfully the QLD racers will come down and those from from Victoria that make it to Warwick, will come to Sydney. It would be an awsome meet.

Don't get me wrong Portland is a great venue, bit of a drive, pitty people just didn't make the effort.

SebastienPeek - September 5th, 2011 at 08:46 PM

Where's the Adelaide track?

Might as well see what times Zelda would pull just for shits and giggles!

A 1200 is slow - September 10th, 2011 at 09:49 AM

This is sad news if it is true....

It would be great if it went to Heathcote though for some 1/4 mile action !!

essex - September 10th, 2011 at 01:48 PM

Is there any more more news on this?

It seems like a lot of the VW drag racers live in NSW so I am putting my money on NSW
Eg Vintage, CBB, ROD, WPVW, Hound dog, inch pincher, Rose racing, Henry, Ben, Westy, Kev, etc .
Having said that let me say this I have been know to be wrong before :crazy::lol:

matt - September 10th, 2011 at 06:49 PM

we were very disapointed as it is the closest event to us. we supported every way we could, going to every portland event, powdercoating the trophies(this year) and paying the entry fee every year, but unfortunatly it wasnt enough. A big thank you to craig and co for organising portland drags. if there is ever another event down this way we will be sure to support it.
matt and summa

I am also very sorry to hear of the cancellation. I was planning to go again, this time take my baja to the dunes and then the strip in 2012. :(

Plenty in Adelaide too.
Pity this has happened as a lot of us travelled over there.

An Adelaide event is no go at this stage. Still no useable track. Plenty of good cars here, though.
Shame about Portland, I was looking forward to it.
How about Mildura? That's pretty accessible.

Better keep Saturday 26th November free then and make your way out to AIR-first 1/8th mile meet being run by the new owner.I like your idea about Mildura-a good venue.

vw54 - September 19th, 2011 at 07:39 AM

Mildura would be good

Matt Ryan - September 19th, 2011 at 07:41 PM

Yesterday at the event I went to at Comboyne, a guy from Four Aces Drag Racing Club announced that they had just received APPROVAL from council to run events at Kempsey airport.

byronmcmanus59 - September 19th, 2011 at 10:45 PM

mildura isn't supposed to be a good track, track conditions are usually poor, youtube some of the doorslammers that went there last year

nbturbo - September 26th, 2011 at 10:46 PM

I was talking to a bloke from Portland tonight who is tied up with the Club there and as far as he is aware-the VW Drag show in February is still on????????? They have had some serious flood damage to the track there recently-but they are just about on top of it and will be ready to race late October.

byronmcmanus59 - September 26th, 2011 at 11:06 PM

Who were you talking to man? Yeah you should see the track, its all gone!

Well we have been told that its all off so thats as much as we know..

ian.mezz - September 27th, 2011 at 12:44 PM

Once the guys get the track fixed, there is nothing stopping all the VW racers down that way of getting together and racing in with one of their meets ,
Rose and I go to lots of races and we are always trying to get as many VW racers as we can to come and race.
we hope to race at Willowbank next year.;)

LOWBUG - September 27th, 2011 at 04:35 PM
