pushrods & tube recomendations
Turbo54 - November 22nd, 2011 at 05:20 PM

Hi All,
Looking at the valve train for my car and want to know which direction to head in. Not looking at a big rev motor 6500 max.
2165 turbo + EFI.

I haven't done any homework in this area yet.
Thanks in advance,
Heath

Have a look at Jaycee for the tubes

I always use stock pushrod tubes when I can.
Some street eliminators and superflow heads may require shorter 1200 ones.

If you want shiny adjustables, make sure they clear your under-cylinder tin.

Pushrods depend entirely on the rest of the valvetrain and cam/rocker combo.
In fact some people get away with stock pushrods, if your stuff is light enough.

I personally prefer heavy duty stuff for the push rod.
Pauter or berg 3/8", or manton tapered should be more than enough
unless you like more rpm and roller cams.

Thanks Dave,
I haven't sorted any valve train elements out yet apart from 1.25 autocraft rockers.

I was waiting for the final weight of the car and tyre size until I went down the path of choosing the cam and the rest of the valve train.

Thanks
Heath

For a race engine I like the Jaycee type, you get a better torque on the heads with no tubes installed , after torqueing is finished I slip them on. I was suprised the first time I torqued a set of heads with stock push rod tubes and rechecked them after sitting awhile that the torque was off, have to retorque them multiple times before they stop compressing. I agree with Dave on the pushrod statements . Mike McCarthy

Good point Mike, the latest Hot VW's mag has an article stating exactly that. I've seen issues with the s/s stock style where they pushed so hard on the head the seals were distorted. I pulled out all the tubes and then retorqued. The lower studs were effected the most, but all increased a surprising amount. I use JayCee or Scat gold triple o-ring with good results.

My only complaint with the o ringed tubes has been they freeze up after awhile and will not expand and contract with the engine. I have tried differant lubes to prevent it happening but nothing has worked perfectly so far , by design stock ones do not have this problem. Mike McCarthy

For pushrods get some chevy big block chromoly ones and cut them to length then you also have a spare set.
