WPVW Drag Bus (new project for world record attempt)
hypo-vw - March 4th, 2012 at 09:44 PM

I am currently sitting in a motel in Albury NSW after travelling yesterday to Melbourne to visit my son and other family members , then this afternoon left for Bendigo Vic to collect a 1961 splitty kombi that I have purchased .
This splitty will be the base for the WPVW new drag bus project . The current world record for a VW powered kombi is 11.4@118mph ..... I am very confident that we can smash this record :tu:

I reckon you're going to smash it too ! PLEASE leave the bullet holes in

Looking forward to watching this. you guys will nail it!!

With your big type 4 yu should easily get faster than that 11.4 for a full bodied bus.
The single cab record is a bit faster, but still in reach:

thanks for that Dave , and I agee ...... I too think that 10.24@128 is still in reach .
You have just set Team WPVW a new goal.
My type-4 engine was well down on power when I ran 139.70mph last week in my oval . I have air intake temp issues and only made 1 pass on full throttle , the other 4 runs I had to lift before the line . At Warwick last year the oval had 443rwhp and the dyno session the day before WSID produced 380rwhp . I stll ran the oval as I had installed a really fat tune and A/F's showed between 4.9 - 5.2

When I get this sorted I am confident that it will go fast !!

Love it Wayne

Couldn't they leave the cab on the single cab???

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - March 5th, 2012 at 09:13 AM

Can't wait to see it mate!! What size engine you planning on running? Obviously big block Volkswagen lol!!!!

beetleboyjeff - March 5th, 2012 at 02:10 PM

Wow, I was thinking it will need a REAL good tune up to do that, but if you are UPGRADING all the mechanicals as well.........well that is a big more feasable.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE - March 5th, 2012 at 03:05 PM

Wayne I do believe Aaron Roberts has a split drag bus in the pipeline as well. Rotary powered of course with all the usual engineering feats Aaron loves to make happen!!

matberry - March 5th, 2012 at 03:33 PM

Nice :)

Stanley - March 5th, 2012 at 04:13 PM

Good luck Wayne. When completed I'm sure it will be a fun ride with all that power.

vw54 - March 5th, 2012 at 04:25 PM

saw you driving north on the hwy near gundagai yesterday draging the bus home, sounds like a good plan.

DavoBuggy 1641 - March 6th, 2012 at 08:52 AM

Sounds good, If that doesn't push Aaron to start building his drag bus nothing will! Lol, good luck with the build though, not that you guy's need it. There will probably be a youtube link of it tearing down your street in a couple of weeks!!

Cheer's Dave!

Brennden, send me your details and I will get you a set, they will however need machining to suit.

wow, maybe someone should dig up the old APE bus and get that back on the track.....

Sounds like Craig might need a new category for Warwick, Fastest Splitty......

20bkombi - April 24th, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Any progress Wayne???

The latest cruizin magazine has an article on the ape bus. Good read on how the ape bus came to be and how Neville alder used to get paid to do demo runs at drag meets.

If this is a "World Record attempt" you would prsume there are actual rules or is it a free for all,?
Does it have to be VW powered?
Does it have to be regoed?
Or is it a free for all?
What is classed as a "World Record"?

Hi Aaron , I have no plans of starting the build on the kombi till I have completed the current build on my new circuit car . I am spending all of my spare time on the space-frame sports sedan trying to get it ready for the VW nationals supersprint , the other 4 hours in each day I sleep . At this stage I cant see the build being completed in time for this event and I will not take short-cuts to make the event .
You can check out the progress on the circuit racing section on this forum .
I will PM you shortly regarding the transmission for the kombi . Wayne
