clarification from WPVW on VWMA ad
hypo-vw - May 8th, 2012 at 08:26 PM

After several recent interstate enquiries and some careful consideration , I have decided to respond to the use of ‘Team WPVW’ cars in the ‘RPR’ advertisement in the latest VWMA edition

This ad has been deceptive, misleading & legally questionable . Even the magazines editor was led to believe that permission was given for the use of Team WPVW cars in Rodneys’ ad

At NO time were any Team WPVW members consulted about the use of our cars in his ad , nor was permission granted . The implication that RPR has contributed to the success of our cars is a blatant misrepresentation of the role played by a “parts supplier”

I am both frustrated & angry that any person , let alone a “parts supplier” , would mislead people into believing that he has played a major role in the success of Team WPVW

All Team WPVW cars have been professionally built at WPVW using both local & imported brand parts ( Empi , Scat , Pauter , CB Performance , Bugpak etc) & although a very small portion of these parts were imported for us by Rodney , none of them bare the brand name ‘RPR racing products’

It has taken many years of R&D for me to achieve the current success enjoyed by Team WPVW at present & I don’t appreciate anybody thinking that they can use our success to further their own business without my consent

Wayne Penrose , Team WPVW

I personly don't think Rodney was trying to take anything away from the good work ( vw work , drag racing , helping people) WPVW has done in the vw drag racing scene guys or your workmenship on volkswagens .
The add is more a sponsor or parts seller getting clever with a add , as a follow up after the event .
Yes the last sentence could be writen little better but we all know Rodney may be the biggest vw performance parts importer and seller Australia has .
Pictures of your car can be bought buy anyone from the photographers .
Maybe Rod should of ask if it was alright with the owner , to use there car in add but I can't see where it takes anything away from the person who owns , built , raced at the event , made the vw shootout class , with there picture used .
If anything it's a big big well done guys .
The funny thing !! Rod R motor came from USA complete and freshened by MR Butler so the carb jets may be the only thing supplied by Rodney .
Cheers .

yes Pete , anyone can purchase a pic of another persons car from a photoghrapher , however this does not give that person the automatic right to use them in an advertisement , no matter what the advertisement is for .... It would just take some common sense & respect for the owner of said car to be contacted to obtain permission to use the pics .... neither were there in this case .

Funny thing !! Chris Boltons' engine has been build entirely from parts that I purchased from the US . Rodney did supply parts for Chris' previous engine in the Formula vee , but it broke and was not re-used in his current drag beetle .

Funny thing !! the only parts I purchased from Rodney for my oval was a set of 2nd hand Pauter heads and Scat sent my new crank directly to him . All other parts for my Type-4 turbo engine were purchased in the US .

Out of interest .... did Rod R. give permission for his car to be used in this ad ?

coletrickle - May 9th, 2012 at 08:37 PM

Pete people pay to have stickers on my car and that gives them the right to use the image/ results in any advertising etc.You could look at a diffrent way I bought food from Aldi at ballina on the way down which kept me fueled up thu the day and allowed me to runner up in the air cooled bracket because with out food I'd be hungry and not on top of my game. Now for Aldi to turn around and use the image of my car with out my say so in a nation wide magazine saying they some how contributed to my win? Well I just don't think that would be right either? Not without some form of "sponsorship"

Regardless of the issues here I was amused by the fact when I clicked on this thread there was a Rod Penrose Racing banner et the top of the page.

A simple way would have been an add congratulating the quick 8 cars and drivers for their acheivement in just qualifing where they did!

That is exactly what the add has done.
It congratulates the pictured cars for their acheivement in the "top VW" category.

Ethically? Perhaps he should have asked permission of the drivers
to menton that they used some parts he had supplied.

Rodney always gives me excellent prices on the parts I get from him.
Even though I only have some small parts on the car(no engine parts) from him,
I would not mind at all
if he used a photo of my car to improve his business,
especially when I consider how many times he has
supplied me some parts that got me out of a bind.

coletrickle - May 10th, 2012 at 07:54 AM

Sorry Dave don't have the magazine in front of me but there was more than 6 cars in the quick bracket? Congratulate them all and name them all?At warrick a couple of years back myself and an unnamed person tried to rightly or wrongly award $500 to the fastest street tyred muffler car in quallifying as a way to get some excitement around the lower class of racing. Now I don't have a buissness to promote and Craig and Rodney came down real hard on me alluding to the fact that some how I was trying to proffit from all craigs
hard work?Same situation if you ask me?Except I had nothing to gain only $250 to loose! Rant over.

Ethically Dave ? that should not even be a question in this instant .... It should have been systematic of a company (RPR) to have the common decency to obtain approval from another company (WPVW) to use their advertising material (our cars) in any form of advertising .

You would not have minded him using your car in his ad and I respect that decision on your behalf , however Dave you are not another VW company who uses their cars at race meetings etc for promotion of their own VW performance work . In my opinion the use of a private persons car for advertising without permission is a low act ..... but the use of another companys cars (branded with said companys advertising logos) without obtaining permission is much much lower

HappyDaze - May 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM

Now, now lads.......nothing wrong with a bit of sibling rivalry, but we don't want WW 3 to start in Australia, particularly so close to me!

I'm wondering IF anything needs to be settled, could it be done on the track/drag-strip:?: Now wouldn't that be a lot more fun than on a boring old forum:?:

ian.mezz - May 10th, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Craigs a good bloke , Id say he will run something in the next mag , to put every one at ease.

barls - May 10th, 2012 at 12:39 PM

strange the person in question hasnt weighted in since hes normally so quick on these things.

Stanley - May 10th, 2012 at 12:50 PM

I haven't seen the ad in question yet but will be sure to have a look now. Can I also add I respect both you guys as volksy racers and business owners and only now you both well enough to say g'day at race meets.

Can I ask as to whether you have spoken directly to the other party involved. If not wouldn't the best thing to do be to approach them with your concern, and let them issue a correction and or apology in the next issue. This is how things like this are normally settled if it was a misunderstanding.
If you have I can't help but think whether or not this post would be here if it had been another company. I think that the fact you share surnames has more to do with it.
I'm also assuming this can't be settled over a beer at a family BBQ. Hope all parties can reach an amicable solution.

I will assure you that this is not an attack on my brother Rodney due to some family conflict and there has been no conflict between us for many years . We had dinner together for our grandmothers 90th birthday last saturday night and still talk .

I have purchased parts from him in the past and will continue to do so in the future , but there is a line in the sand between 2 business' that cannot be overstepped even by a relative . He has his business and does things his way and I have my business and do things my way ..... It has worked for both of us for many years now and he has been helpful on some occassions , sometimes loaning me parts when I am out of stock and on several occassions in recent times he has borrowed parts from me to complete his engines , as recent as last week ringing me for some chevy conrod bearings .

If it was a car from the CBB Team that ended up in the WPVW ad or vise-verser , the results would be the same .

However the line between 2 busniness' has been overstepped by Rodney and the purpose of this post was not to crucify him , but to inform members that permission was not granted for WPVW cars to be used in his ad , we dont promote RPR products and dont build our engines with RPR products as claimed .

I think a formal apology by RPR in the next issue of the VWMA magazine will go a long way to healing the hurt I feel after being disrespected in this way

Dire Straits..
Brothers in arms...............

tayloredvw - May 15th, 2012 at 05:46 PM

What stanely said was a good way to approach it.

I don t know either of you well, but i do admire you both and what you've achieved, but this issue, if it continues will only harm the vw community.

your kidding right???
it's two blokes!
the VW community won't suffer

pete wood - May 19th, 2012 at 05:25 PM

I too have a brother in VW circles and occasionally, like most brothers, we lock horns a little from time to time.

However, I find the best fix is a hot cup of cocoa and quick phone call. Solves most things... [rather than a thread] ;)
