I would just like opinions on this, yes some will say " not this again" but i would like a decent discussion not a bullshit fight.

Now what should qualify as the fastest street beetle?
In my opinion it obviously has to be legally registered and the engine number match the paperwork, otherwise its not legal and shouldnt be on the road.( otherwise you could just throw a Kieth Black big block in there,) OK yes you would need a bit of modification to fit that in there?

Also it should have a block built by VW, not Pauter or any of the other exotic makers.
It should also be able to drive to a track, not trailered because it has no cooling ect as that defeats the idea of it being a "street" vehicle.
Obviously seat 4 as thats how it was intended,

Its like saying "Fastest VW" when you build a car that hasnt got a motor made by VW and the body is a fiberglass copy of a beetle shape over a space frame, to me that is not a VW.

I would say Keith Haslers blue would go pretty close to all of the above

I don't think the 4 seat limit is right. Anyone who fits a half decent motor to run a quick time should bring safety into play. As you can't legally run harnesses with a back seat this bit for me is questionable.
It all depends on what your personal idea of quick is. I personally are aiming for low 11's in street trim with engineering and rego approval.

Thats what i mean by " legally" registered.
Any one can throw a huge motor in a registered body and say its a street car, doesn't mean its a legal street car.

Jeff Unwin was the original architect of the Road Registered rules for the Gene Berg Trophy, in consultation with Gene Berg himself. These were the rules as of 1993, when they were published in the Club Veedub magazine Zeitschrift:

1. Vehicle must be registered; ie. Chassis number to match up with registration papers, sticker and plates.

2. Cooling system must be intact; ie. Cylinder tin, fan housing and fan fitted (optional if fanbelt fitted on any run).

3. Best time in racing only to be counted.

4. Vehicle must run on pump petrol; ie. Unleaded, Optimax or BP 98.

5. Street tyres must be run (no drag slicks, but road tyres of any condition OK)

6. Rear seat and seat belts are optional, but both front seats must be fitted.

7. Fibreglass guards, whaletail, spoilers and bumpers O.K., but doors and body must be of metal.

8. No perspex windows allowed. All windows must be glass.

9. Spare wheel must be fitted (this is for safety reasons).

10. Exhaust is free, but must meet track noise requirements.

11. Vehicles for this class must be able to be driven on the street. If there is any doubt you could be asked to go on a 15 km drive.

The Gene Berg trophy was awarded for the fastest legally registered VW at the VW Nationals drag day, which was held at Oran Park from 1992 to 2002, then WSID from 2004-05. The Gene Berg trophy winners have included :

Richard Holzl (1992); James McKinnon (1993); Keith Haeusler (1994, 95); Paul Muller (1996); Mike Kristen (1997); Leigh Harris (2000, 01, 02, 04 and 05). I don't know who won in 1998-99. Leigh and his green turbo Beetle are the current champions (the trophy is currently retired). As Club Veedub owns the rights to the Gene Berg trophy, and the current drag series is run by VWMA, I don't know if the trophy will ever be presented again; perhaps it could be made part of the Sydney WSID VW drag day in future - it would be up to the Club Veedub and VWMA committees.

As the donator of the trophy (via Gene Berg), Jeff Unwin is still the final word as to what constitutes a legal road registered VW under the terms of this competition.

I'm happy with my car it gets along OK and its Street Registered and engineered. Just keep in mind its not hard to get a race car registered and some of them can be driven on the street.

tell me why the gene berg trophy (held in NSW) is the be all end all when there are certainly other cars (most probably) out there that could vie for the title by other means.
please correct me if i'm wrong.

I doubt its the be all and end all but i suppose it does have rules that everyone knows.
Others have gone faster but as my original post referred to, anyone can change the engine to a full on drag strip one and go down the 1/4 but that doesnt make it a street car.
I wanted to know who has the fastest STREET car , one that could actually be legally ( engine number is the same one actually on the rego papers) driven from Melbourne to Sydney and actually make it on its own?
