Hi All,
I would like to hear your recommendations for a Head Unit for my 1500 beetle as my current one is shagged. The old one is a sony Xplod that gave me
heaps of grief with skipping no matter how I mounted it, it would even skip if I ran over one of those square reflectors on the side or centre of the
road. Is it a case of the more you pay the better the ability to deal with bumps etc. or is there a special trick to mounting them? My beetle is
lowered about 2" and the ride is fairly hard.
Not looking to spend a fortune but interested to hear about your setups and how they handle the road shock.
Cheers
Brendan
go a better brand than super cheap x-plod...
i recommend pioneer, or if ur on a budget, boss. when you install your head deck, place a thn layer of foam both below and above, this way, your head
deck will fit snugly, but it also provides a cushion to help with any skipping.
the boss mp3 player in my bug never skipped, and it got a thrashing.
Hey,
I've just put in a Pioneer HU which is ipod compatible and its great. no skipping, ( when using ipod ) and great sound, it supports mp3, but by far
the best feature is the ability to control an ipod from the HU while it charges the ipod.
If you are interested I'll find the code thingy.
Oh where abouts have you got your current HU mounted???????
James.

Have you got an AMP?
Xplod is a sony, so not so cheap, and I replaced a pioneer one with an Xplod because the pioneer used to skip.... it sounds like a mounting problem in your case, but as others have said, get something that has an input for an iPod or mp3 player. They don't jump at all and you can have your whole CD collection in the car with you....
yeah...just forked out $280 for a Sony CDX-GT350...which turned out a solid buy...especially when compared to my old cheap pioneer deck, there is considerable difference... the digital enhancers/equaliser fattens the sound back out from its flat sounding compression when played on the old deck..... I'd agree with the mounting problem theory too.... although some of the entry level sony stuff is pretty craparolla....
Pioneer DEH-P4850MP is the HU
Plays cd's really well although I haven't lowered my beetle,......yet
Go the Kenwood,
i have had them in my cars from the krc868d(the very first passive headunit made) to my current one the 777r
I had them i my bettle that was lowered to within a millimeter of its life and so stiff i had to run 12psi in the fronts so the car had some form of
suspension. i have never had a problem with them jumping and they were mounted in the dash. Sure every now and then they did but u show me a cd player
that doesn't
The thing with head units is everyone will tell you the one they like is the best, in all honesty the top brands ar all pretty much of a muchness
but be warned DONT buy the cheaper ones as they are crap. the big companys make a cheap version so that people can buy them and run around sayin they
have a kenwood/alpine/ etc etc.. dont be fooled into thinking your buying a good quality unit for 150 bucks...
its all about what u want and how u want to listen to it.... if you want good sound spend to match if your after cheap noise buy cheap.. like
anything for the msot part the more u spend the better u get
steff..........
p.s....... KENWOODS THE BEST:P:P
Most Pioneer decks use Alpine mechanisms and electronics, I've always found them to be nice sounding and reliable, but I wholly agree with DubCrazy in that most top units are much of a muchness, so buy what you want to spend.
my daily ute got broken into so i have had to replace the deck with my spare pioneer 5750mp. none of which i have had a problem with, neither have my
brother or any of our mates (brother and mates work at a car audio joint)
but at the end of the day, you DO get what you pay for.
