Dumb stereo question
velvet glove - November 7th, 2006 at 05:52 PM

When I bought my 74 Beetle it had an old radio/cassette player mounted in the middle of the dash but no speakers.

I assume that one of thr speakers is positioned just next to the speedo (on its right) straight in front of me, but is there a spot for a 2nd speaker? Is it on the opposite side of the speedo to the other one? What size speakers are they?

The reason I ask is that I am going to replace the old radio/cassette with something a little more modern, and I'd like the sound to be as good as possible without going too nuts. Put simply I'd like to only have speakers where they are supposed to be

Many thanks

VG

Hi

There is no spot on the dash for a 2nd speaker, we are talking about cars from the mono era. So the only thing you can do is mount them in the doors (not ideal) or rear 1/4 panels beside the rear seats or in a custom shelf behind the backseat.

splits in the doors and a pair of 6x9s in the back with a small sub under the rear seat. Small amp to run it all. Put HU in the glove box out the way of thieves. or check Das' thread, think he mounted them in the kick panels in the front.

Jaycar has pretty good stuff for not much money.

What would people suggest as the cheapest option for the best sound? I was considering a good quality head unit (with MP3). The question then would remain where to put the 2 speakers. If they won't go in the front how expensive is it to get them mounted in say the rear panels next to the back seats.

I may consider an upgrade in a few years, but at this stage all I want to do is break the silence with a reasonable sound quality

Cheers

what ccc has suggested is a good setup. I got a cheap set a while back, have since disconnected em to continue work, but it included 2 tweeters in the doors, and 2 6'' woofers sittin under the rear seat bolted onto that plate that goes from the floor up to the top seat frame. and by involving the rear seats, the bass created is amazing! let alone the vibes ur whoeva's bum is in the rear.

I'm just looking for a basic 2 speaker set up, and the best place to put them

depending on what u want to spend there are plenty of options out there
in the doors defitnalty does suck unless u get some pods but even those protrude and take up alot of space in an already cramped enviroment
so front kickpanel mountings are good
but for just a good quality 2 speaker set up i'd go a mp3 head JVC is good quality at a good price ive found and 2 6x9s in a parcel tray

6x9s are pointless if ur gonna install a sub/subs
3way 6 1/2" are just as good if not a better option
