I've been driving my T3 Transporter for a while now. long enough to realise that a major short coming is lack of cabin storage spaces (aside from the floor), and certainly none of the obligatory cup holders. I temporarily fixed the problem by installing a portable fridge in between the seats (including two cup holders!), but after six months of use it's starting to throw in the towel.

I'm thinking of designing and building a cutom unit, but before I embark on this, has anyone:
- A/ Already done this
- B/ Know of someone who would build something professionally?

I don't know if this is helpful but I bought a cup holder from a mid 90s Toyota Hi Lux to fit into my bug, it was about $50.00 new.

Those cup holders look good, but my plan is to have some storage under a centre arm rest, and possibly a DVD player and screen for the back pax...

Well, after alot of research, I decided to build a centre console for my T3. The idea originally stemmed from the need for some cup holders, but ended up encompassing a whole lot more. Of course this gets rid of the walk through feature, but due to my size, I found I didn't really use it anyway.

I am no builder so aside from a very rough original plan of the supporting frame, the entire build was all fly by the seat of your pants stuff. In my head I knew what I wanted but I just ended up getting there in a very round about way.

Frame was built using 19mm pine, wood "skin" was 12mm MDF and padding was Clark Rubber foam (~20mm thick) covered in black vinyl from Spotlight.

I ended up including a few extra features as follows:
- Front open storage bin (near gear stick)
- Folding padded arm rest
- Switched blue LED illumination for storage bin under arm rest
- Moulded and padded iPod shelf
- Rear console containing DVD player/LCD monitor
- Pull out draws for cup holders and remote controls
- Wireless headphones (transmitter and three sets of headphones)


















Total budget was less than $400 which included everything except for the iPod. Just need to get the rest of the interior up to scratch now.

All in all I am happy, with only a few things that I would do differently next time. I just hope there isn't a next time as it ate up lots of time...

In regards to attaching it, first I removed the plastic ventilation duct channel underneath it. It's made from pretty thick plastic. I then mounted the console onto the duct channel by screwing through the plastic with large headed long screws directly into the timber frame of the console. Duct channel then went back. It's not going anywhere.
