Has anyone had experience with installing a new headliner? I have a new repo one but after looking at it and reading the instructions I am thinking of subbing this one out.

I did one years ago - a velour one! - and it was easy. Simply hang it from the bits of wire and use clothes pegs and hardware shop work clamps to align it side to side and front to rear into the window apertures, then glue it in.

If its a vinal type liner put it out in the sun for a while before instalation as it will help get the wrinkles out

What about the padding around the B pillars, side windows and along the top rail, ect? I scraped all of the old stuff off to clean it up properly. Do you need to replace this? I have read some instructions and they talk about cardboard to hold the front and rear but my headliner kit doesnt have any bits in it. It is an EMPI off white headliner and looks pretty good. Also what type of insulation material is used on the roof?

You can buy stick-on sound insulation padding from interior/motor trimmer/sound supply joints to go on the sheetmetal inside of the turret. It's chopped up cotton mat with a sticky backing on one side and a felt lining on the other. I used that material to replace the foam on the pillars, too, for a smoother appearance. I deleted the cardboard above the front and rear windows, simply pulling the headlining straight through to the window apertures

OK you are talking me into it. Any suggestions what type of adhesive to use?

plain ol' contact adhesive.. you only need to glue the edges and a paint brush will be fine for applying it

I have just finished installing a headliner in a 74 bug (flat windscreen model) it is not an easy job to do. This is my third headliner installation and I'm happy with the job.
Some advice dont use brush on contact adhesive buy a can or two of 3M spray on headliner adhesive, the reason is spray the area that you want the headliner to stick to (it must be clean use acetone or wax and grease remover) if you use brush on type it will come through the perferations and get a stick mess every where. The spray on type once tacky wont. if your having trouble finding the 3m stuff go to a panel paint suppliers and they will have something just a good as the 3m product.
The next thing you must use is a hot air gun, and go to office works and buy about 25 - 30 fold back paper clips. take your time and soften the vinyl with the hot air gun it will stretch out all the wrinkles easily. good luck!!!!!
