iphone dock
donn - August 11th, 2011 at 09:55 AM

I spent the last few days looking for an iphone dock to play music in my buggy (no radio :fakesniff:)
I need speakers and be able to run / charge it through my vehicles power outlet, does anyone here know of a unit that will do the job, I'm having no joy with the usual outlets.
Thanks
Don

Hi donn,

Not sure if this will help but I use my laptop in my work car by using an inverter.

It plugs in to the cigarette lighter and has a 3pin plug on it.

I think it's made by targus.

This may allow you to plug in a docking station that requires power.

I bought a TomTom cradle for mine at Johnny Appleseed, and use it for a speedo as well

Thanks Aussie Dubbin, my problem is I don't have a radio, glove box or ashtray, no room, so I need a dock that will charge and have speakers, they are available but cant charge from the vehicle, only home power.
11CAB, does the one you have include speakers for music and maybe hands free for the phone, as it is I have the hands free going through my Garmin.
vvwbeetle, trying to sort the link you gave me, they may have something that will work.
Just a thought, does anyone know if the iphone will link to the Garmin for music?

The TomTom has a speaker in it for hands free phone calls, but I wouldn't call it a flash speaker. It does alright for what I want

Donn, I assume it will be just like an iPod, so you should be able to get a cigarette lighter 12v to USB converter to plug your iPhone into and you can use some pc speakers via the headphone jack. Depending on the speakers, you might need a 2 into 1 adapter. Sure it's not elegant but it should work. You could also add a generic windscreen mount for convenience. I picked some up for $3 delivered from hk and they are better than the genuine ones. Cheers cam

Mine's an ipod interface I-bus setup, charges the ipod and controls it like a having a 2000 disc CD stacker

Connection's in the glovebox cos I don't have an ashtray in my dash anymore.

Got a JVC one in the bug and a Pioneer one in the mainstreamer, Pioneer one is abit more user friendly than the JVC one.

Mate why don't you use a cigarette lighter charger, then run you iPod/phone straight into an amp, angry out to speakers. Works great. Did it for my younger brother. No need for radio face plate

If you are going to get a cig lighter lead and put that in, I would recommend getting a genuine Apple accessory. Some customers are having a lot of trouble with I-whatevers when the firmware is upgraded ( which happens immediately when connected to the I-store) such as not charging any more when connected to their non-gen charger.
Apple is stiching up their market to only work with genuine or licenced accessories so if you want it to work in the future you better go genuine.
