Difference between roof mounted and engine bay side mounted antenna??

I own a Golf 95', just curious about the difference between roof mounted and engine bay side mounted antenna, anybody knows the difference about it?

roof was a later model

Up to 95 for the wing mounted one and 96> for the "bee-sting" one. Late model also meant OBDII on VR6s, cruise control on GLs etc etc

One is on the roof and one is on the body. Very simple.

Roof mount aerial was all VR6 golfs and 1996 onwards 2.0l and 1.8cl
