T3 Auto removal nightmare!
Menangler - May 19th, 2006 at 09:05 PM

Has any one pulled an auto trans out of a T3 van using a trolley jack, car ramps and a block of wood? Its nasty, I hate it

I just did it again in my wifes '89 Caravelle for about the 5th time, in 5 years, what a bastard of a job, it doesn't get any easier, sliding off the block of wood, just won't balance right on the jack, so bloody heavy, auto fluid all over the floor, CV greese in my hair, its just a nasty job.

The torque converter decided to make bad weird noises during the week so I decided to change it for a spare one I had in the shed, and after finally getting all the splines lined up and the converter sitting in the right position, fitting everything back in, its just a noisey as the one I pulled out, so I have to do it all again tomorow!! anyone want to give me a hand?

I hate autos!:o

Hi

I feel your pain,I think you need to make a gearbox holder, below is the one I made for the G50. The G50 just didnt want to sit on a jack, so I made holder that just slides into the top of my floor jack.

Just having ATF fluid everywhere is enough.....

specially made trolleys are the way to go.....

Best of Luck...

Looks like You will have to take the transmission to an Automatic repair specialist...

I was all set to make a jig this morning to pull the box out again, but before I started thought I would start the car up again and have a listen, looking down throught the inspection hatch, the noise was coming from the bellhousing area, just the same as before, I slid under the car on a creaper and had a listen, mmmmm noise seemed to be coming from the rear of the engine??? had a bit of a think..... bugger, it was the water pump all along, took the trany out for nothing!! I pulled the belt off the pump to be sure, and it was quiet, so just had to change the water pump, that is another bastard of a job in its self!!
But she is fixed and quiet again.

Not much time left to prepare the Beetle for the drags tomorrow, just chucked it on the trailer, will sort it out at the track in the morning.

the great escape dave ...mate the very worst transmission to remove from a vw is a T4 syncro....you always invent new words when pulling out one of those babies....with factory tools i will add.....so life is not so bad just thin k every time you feel stuck.its not a T4 syncro cheers steve
