handbrake rod placement?
humpty - April 7th, 2007 at 03:35 PM

Ok guys.... I haven't spent much time on this part of AVD in the past.... Forgive me for the disgression.... Im pretty new to the 'waterbottle' world of Dub'dom!!!!

This is a strange one for you all....

I bought my T3 as a rego'd wreck and have been slowly transforming it. I have been doing a engine conversion for a while now (the bus had a blown Golf TD engine in it) and one of the many things that needed attention on the old girl was the handbrake linkage.... It seems that the OG handebrake rod under the bus had rusted to oblivion (UK import bus you understand). As a result, I need to replace it...

So my question is this.... Where the heck does the rod actually run through the chassis? As the handbrake to centre bracket is offset, and the coolant lines run through that area, I can't seem to visualise the correct route for the rod to pass.... Anyone have a picture or description handy?

And before you suggest it.... I have bought a manual, but it will not arrive tell next week.... but I would like to get this sorted before then.

Cheers in advance.....

OK, as far as i can tell, without getting underneath the T3 at night, in the dark, which is downstairs in the garage, where it is colder because of the southerly blowing,
the cable or rod should be from memory a straight run to the equaliser at the rear and then split into left and right handbrake lines.
From the handbrake in cab it is or should be a straight run back the equaliser as described i cannot visualise any through holes as i gather u need or would like.
I can say it does not run through any holes or guide holes it just sits out there for all to see. That is without actually getting underneath, oh heck see first paragraph.
Still not convinced check post mid morning tomorrow.
The Bentley Bible does not help either.

Thanks for that, but....

I think you will find there is a little bit of a alignment issue with the set-up... The handbrake lever is offset slightly to the driverside and it comes through the floor very close to the radiator and heater pipes.... It is at this point that it concerns me... The short cable section of the link runs through a rubber bush against the underfloor at which point it must cross past the pipes to align with the 'equaliser' pressing.... Might have to suck it an see I guess....

Cheers for the help though....

OK i have been a little busy of late tinkering with my own T3.
Ok from what i can see without dropping the fuel tank, the cable or rod goes into a grommet hole above the radiator lines. Pretty much center of rad lines after that it is a fuel tank drop and that's up to u.
Sorry the wait wasn't worth it..
I can take a pic if u really want but i expect u have already solved the prob/query.
