Hi all, has anyone had any dealings with a caddy ute? (A Mk2 Golf, with a ute tray instead of a backseat.)

I have the opportunity to buy one, already RHD, for a reasonable price. 1.8 fuel injected motor, a/c, Power steering, etc

Looking at reliability issues, or known faults.

I'm asking because VW never made a Caddy based off of the Mk2 ?

So be careful if purchasing

i have owned a few caddys while in the uk from base model to the gti, they never came on the MK2 shell only the MK1, no major problems to point out, they are no different to the MK1's in that respect just check for rust on the inner guards and at the bottom of the a pillers as they both are bad rust spots.

Thanks guys. The car has been previously registered here in Vic as a VW ute, so is on the books. Prior to registration here, it would have had to be certified by an engineer. The car was built in 84, however, whoever did the conversion used a 79 golf as a donor (Firewall, dash, etc) and as a donor was used, it was registered in the year of the donor.

The mechanicals are Mk2 golf. I have been informed of his by someone I trust who works on them, and who has seen the vehicle.It is equipped with a 1.8 injected motor (Not electronic but mechanical... No computer...) The only rust is a little on the wheel arch above the rear Passenger side wheel, due to plastic flares being previously fitted. This is being removed as we speak by the same panel beater who did the only 51 factory RHD split bug in the country (One of two in the world)

What are the obvious differences between Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs, as I am new to them.

It is replacing the kombi, which over the last 4 months has seen an engine replacement, a head replacement in the last 6 weeks, and two weeks after that blew the other. I cannot justify spending any more on her. Running low on time and money. This was due to bad fuel, and possiibly contaminents in the fuel tank. (Beware of the Shell servo in Melbourne Rd Wodonga.)

I know that I'll miss her, but enough is enough. And this is still VW...

A dub is a dub.
Even the newer ones are dubs; even thought some people think driving them makes them "better".

Well to wet your appetites, and for those who have never seen one, here are some pics.

She is still covered with the two and a half years of grime and filth (Thanks to being parked at the back of a shed.) The wheels are off to have new rubber fitted, and the rust has been removed from the rear quarter.

The interior has been previously equipped with a set of porsche seats, and an Audi steering wheel. On closer inspection, I also discovered that she was one of the South African production runs, and as a result is factory RHD. Some one has butchered the airconditioning system, but my mate, Mark, who runs Imported Wreckers in Springvale has a MK2 golf which has a rooted body, which will have its A/C system donated to the Caddy.

The Ute is due to have a new windscreen, a well as a cut and polish and rear bumper placed back on before Anzac day, with a RWC on Thursday with rego on Friday.

Will post more pics as they become available.

After a new battery was fitted, she started and idled after 3 cranks....

Ive seen these toys before in on Mexican eBay.
So thats what it is, could never interpret Mexicano language.
Full respray and a set of 17" rims will make all the difference.

A bit more history behind this Caddy. It was imported into Australia by one of Melbourne's Porsche service centes in the mid 80's (The C series plates were issued around '85), and used as the parts delivery ute. The blue on top is a Porsche color (To be identified).

The car then went to a carpet layer, who bought it in the late 90's. For some reason he apparently parked it and left it in his back yard for several years. When Mark found out about it, he went to this blokes place, and discovered it sitting there with five full rolls of carpet sitting in the tray, and the rear axle sitting on its bump stops.

Mark then brought it back to his workshop, whit the intentions of "doing something with it". He ran around in in for two months until the rego expired, then parked it at the back of his shed. That was two and a half years ago.

late mk1 golfs did come out in 1.8 and 5 speed etc but by that time vw had pulled the pin in australia we finally saw this motor in our 90/91 mk2 and the audi 80 these mk1 based caddys are still in production in south africa as are the sedans
in europe the mk1 caddy pickup was superceded by a polo/seat ibiza based panel van which used the vw A2 platform like the mk2 and mk3 golf
