Is there a reason that the 5 speed boxes from the watercooled kombis are not seemingly used in the conversions or beetles.... are they weak, too big
or other??
Matt
Weak.
really shit 1 st to low and sus 2nd and 3 rd
Shit, what U talkin bout greedy.. U got box problems??
Yes they have faults but what gearbox doesn't? I am thinking they maybe better than the earler kombi boxes, maybe. if for no other reason than being
newer. I really have little experience with the earler boxes. But a T3 box has 5gears, so thats an advantage.

no mines a auto murreys is a 5 he hates it
Dont like a manual u guys must be getting old :P not too many VW's out there that go hard with an auto.
Proove me wrong.
But i wouldve thought with the standard 3speed auto (they are a 3speed?) the gear changes would be rough and wind out would be somewhat limited.
Where as the 5 speed,,,, ahh Murray lives where? love random thoughts..

Boof a bit like you a little too big to fit into a bug!!!!!
W I D E ratios, maybe?

Unlike traditional 5 speeds that have 4 forward gears and an overdrive 5th, the T3 5 speed is somewhat the reverse with a very low 1st (i.e.
granny/crawler gear) and then another 4 standard type gears. I assume this low 1st gear was designed to compensate for the t3's power to weight
ratio problems (or perceived problems) and help it get off the line (but i think this just makes it worse)
I've found it can be a real pain in stop start/city tarffic where it's hard to avoid stopping, but if you keep it on a roll and avoid having to come
to a complete stop (i.e. putting it in 1st) it's fine....just goota judge the traffic or avoid peak hour traffic jams.
The other problem comes i believe if you want to do a engine conversion and 1st then become redundant and/or no good at launching as it's apparently
very weak. Not sure about the other 4 gears though.
I'm investigating aftermarket R&P's which seem to be very thin on the ground to replace the existing 4.57 (on 2.1 T3's) in anticipation of a
possible ej25 subaru conversion or if i just power up the wbx fit bigger tyres

noew were talking murrey's at ingleburn now his 5 speed and my auto in a recent run up the north coast we had a chance to run them against eachother
the auto won hands down off the line straight and a side by side run at a hill auto by a mile for those who know both murray and myself know the t3's
they have very much the same extras fitted but still use the 2.1 watter moter
also mine is a caravel fulley fitted and air and i run that while we were playing to say my mate was pissed in an understatement

Crikey did Murrey use 2nd gear 2 launch?
Yes an auto will launch better but a manual should pull an auto back in at the mid range. And maybe top end.
Never looked at an auto after the slug like acceleration of the older bay windows. But then again i really dont drive much in the city so having gears
is good for me.
I understand what u r saying kombicountry as a recent trip to Brisbane has left me with a whining noise under hard acceleration Iafter "alot" of
stop starting coming home along gold coast Hway and scoring tweeo acidents ay peak hr, mustve used my left leg about 1000 times stop start stop start,
shit at that time i wish i had an auto not a syncro.
I know for a fact i have done the oil seal and cv boot on inner axle and who knows what else.
Bloody accidents.
yep i only drive mine on weekends. catch train to work. so i don't really have a problem with mine either
My auto T3 gets driven regularly
just did a Sydney / Currumbin / Sydney and it was a delight.
