T3 blown engine!
jaksc - September 28th, 2007 at 07:19 PM

My brother has blown the engine on his water cooled, 2.1 fuel injected T3. Any ideas on costs for either an engine rebuild or reco engine. what do people think of using a subaru engine as a replacement. Any input or ideas would be appreciated.
THANKs:crazy:

Can be up to $6000 depending on how bad the motor is blown.......

rebuilt top end Wasser, circa $4k probably more ... EJ22 conversion circa $9k - thogh look on the bright side, next time the motor will be $500!...

You're not really a T3 owner till you've blown a motor and felt the pain ...

Be carefull who fixes it too! - else you'll be fixing it again next year.

Go the Subi conversion.
Parts easier to source.
Less cost if something goes wrong after conversion.
Better fuel consumption.
More power.
Easier to work up, accessories wise.
Dual pipes out the ass end of a vanagon look sick.

I used to think that going down the road of conversion was being a traitor, but the advantages far outway the loyalties.

Ring around and get prices depending on what is wrong with WasserBoxer motor, you could almost buy the another whole T3 and just part out the old dead one.

I need the slider door side arm rest for center seat.
Oh and dibs on the Gbox if it's manual.

Or buy the whole Subi and part the rest out.
Shit next option is Porsche. 914,944,911......

Any recommendations for engine rebuilders.

I would stick with the original 2.1 and get it rebuilt by a VW specialst, The subi conversion in a T3 is not as good as it is made out to be. :o

What about the porsche conversion?

How has he blown it??

There are GOOD motors out there for $1,500 - $2,000
Under a $1,000 to have it put in

Guess it depends what you want.

If you can wait a while i would be sourcing a good 2nd hand motor.

I know a good VW mechanic Auburn way that is easy on the $$$ and knows his T3's if it is of interest

He is going to keep the car long term so he doesn't mind spending the right dollars . We are after a fully rebuilt motor done properly or suby conversion. I am just trying to get all the facts before deciding. Thanks for the help. Aaron

contact bugs and busses at penrith nsw for a subi conversion price drive in drive out all paper work done
as i have owned mine for a while and blown a donk i was very lucky in the service and a used motor through volkshaven campbelltown nsw lee or tom they supplied and fitted it great job and quality motor highly recomend
but if i didn't have them and the motor i would have gone subi without a doubt power torque and they look like they were ment to be there
but as you can get stainless head studs now for the 2.1 whitch does away with the water corosion that head studs were pronr to
so it really is a prefered choice by the owner that will be final decision prices are about the same
good luck

Just get the 2.1 fixed, Subi engines in VW's are not great especially in a Kombi.
Even if you could get stainless studs it wouldn't fix the corrosion issue , correct coolant and a well maintained cooling system (no leaks) is the answer.
