What oil for 1.8 turbo 20 valve GTI
66deluxe - December 27th, 2007 at 07:12 PM

Hi all, just wondering what oil people are using in a 1.8 turbo motor, i was getting the car serviced at the dealer but man they charge to much, so the last service i did my self and bought the oil filter and air filter from VW, i asked what oil they use and they couldn't tell me what oil is compatible, so i asked how much for 5 litres and they said $22 a litre, no thanks. I ended up using a valvoline product syn guard 5w-40 but now a service is due so might try another oil. What do you kind people reccomend?

Try not to chop and change oils Damo. Not good for the engine or the turbo. I'm a castrol man from way back. Used the old GP50 in all my V8's and the 1916 in kermit. I would use CASTROL MAGNATEC or CASTROL EDGE SPORT 5W-30 depending on your drive style.
Used Castrol Oils at the 3 workshops i have had the pleasure of being the underbody fitter at.

Thats two of a possible ????
Either way it depends on the Garage/workshop on what personal preference to oil's are. Know what i mean??
Full synthetic either way, good luck

I was at VW today to get a new oil filter and in the display cabinet they had a 1 litre bottle of oil for petrol engines and the oil is 5w-30, they also had a bottle of oil for diesel cars and guess who makes it, yep Castrol cause it had the castrol logo on it, problem solved.
