Am I missing Something???????

I have a manual 89 transporter & I cant seem to get the rubber gearstick boot to locate on anything at floor level. I think I am missing a part. Can someone have a look at the photos & advise me if there is something missing or how its supposed to fit? a photo of the missing part or how it should fit would be greatly appreciated.
