Best T3 manual? Trans oil? Much Thanks
dusto81 - November 23rd, 2008 at 01:07 PM

Hi All,

I've recently moved to my most modern VW, an 89 Transporter Trakka Conversion. After having many Bays I am totally in love with the driveability and reliability, tis amazing!! Mind you my heart still flutters a bit when I see a bay...

Anyways I was wondering if anybody had a recommentation for a engine/vehicle manual for the bus? I'm mainly familiar with the aircooleds and keen to get a comprehensive book for the 2.1 litre water coooled to help my familiarity. ANy suggestions most welcome.

Also just wondering what transmission oil to use? Planning to give it a thorough clean up and put in some new oil. Once again any reco's most appreciated.

Cheers,
Dustin

Dustin,
Your heart will stop flutterin' when you see a Bay after you drive your T3 some more!!

The only Manual for a T3 that is any good is the Robert Bently manual, it is expensive but worth it.

You have a couple of choices with gear oil, normal 80-90 gear oil, or a good synthetic equivalent, the T3 2wd 5 speed gearboxes do tend to kill the odd pinion bearing especially when towing. the oil can get too hot so if you use if for towing get a good synthetic.

And don't forget to do a coolant flush and use genuine VW coolant.

Great! Thanks for the help, definitley agree with getting good quality products for the long run.

There's not much doubt I am sold on the water cooled, quietness, reliability and oodles of power!

Volkswagen Vanagon Official Factory Repair Manual 1980-1991 Including Diesel Syncro and Camper (Volkswagen) (Paperback)
by Volkswagen of America

Presently about USD63 from Amazon FWIW.

SOME errors in it but I wouldn't be without it. Probably had it 12 years.

CD is about USD10 delivered to Australia. See:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-1991-VW-VANAGON-SERVICE-REPAIR-MANUAL_W0Q...
(or search for it on ebay.)
I am not sure that this is a legit copy.

Hmm, expensive for the good one, but I'd love to have something good when on the road, espeically out camping.. just in case.
I might buy that ebay CD, only $10 and I'll let you know what it's like, worth a shot, but I'll get the one you swear by too I reckon.
Cheers again
