Hi all,
I'm looking for a cheap starter motor just to get me by for the next little while.
Mine has gone kaput!
Beetle is off the road for other body repairs at the moment but it would be good to be able to move it around rather than push it
I'm in Adelaide , if anyone has a working one that is spare laying around and wants to get rid of it please let me know.
Cheers Dale
are you sure it is the starter motor??
Quite often it is the bushing and the pivot(?) binds and doesn't engage properly
no I'm not 100% sure....
If i try to start it, I get absolutely nothing when I turn the key. I'f I get under the vehicle and belt the starter with a hammer it frees it up a
bit to turn over half a turn or so.
So my conclusion was... there is definately power to the starter, so not a solinoid or power issue.
what is this pivot and bush you speak of>?
have a read here

and here

The bush is the brass ring in the picture
If that wears, the starter motor doesnt engage properly.
Can you borrow a starter??
You "can" replace the bush insitu but it is a pain in the arse.
You can but hi-torque, bush less starters, but they are about $350
Whateve - have a play and get back to us
UPDATE!!... Ok after a few distractions with the bug (fixing some rust... ) I have a new starter to put it the new starter came with the brass bush
as well.
Bizzare said that replacing this can be done insitu (although a pain in the butt),
Can anyone provide some tips on how to do this?
Im yet to get under there and have a look, however i suspect this brass rind in tightly held into place?? and if so, are there any tips/tools to use
that would make the replacement this a little easier in the tigh space that I have to work with.
It is my preference to replace this bush at the same time as putting in the new starter, as then I know it is done, and should last for another 42
years.
Cheers.
Dale
Soak the bush in oil overnight before using. Wind a tap into the old bush and pull it out.
