Anyone know where I can get new field coils for a Bosch 68 beetle generator?
Or is there any "local" auto electrician that does refurbishment?

the field coils usually don't break down unless a wire is broken or cut you can test with a multi meter
they just need cleaning and applying some insulating material like a thick lacquer
Why don't you just buy a fully reconditioned Genny from a VW place ??? lost less work

Yes I know about the coils. I thought I could do this myself. Cleaned it all up including armature, new bearings, re-wrapped the coils in cotton tape
BUT I could not compress the coils back in the generator enough to allow clearance for the armature. I guess the coils shape is now incorrect and I
cannot get them to fit properly. 
Where can I get reconditioned generators from? All the ones I have seen are Chinese look-a-likes. The ones I normally see have two field posts
sticking out, whereas mine has an aperture with a plastic fitting.

VVDS at Campsie they have old ones recod
you can tap the field coils into shape once there fitted in the housing it wont matter too much if there splayed out a little as long as the
insulation dosent break down

your almost there use the inner of the coil to get your shape back I painted mine with shellac from bunnings let it go 3/4 off then wack it in and
tighten it up and that was longer than I care to remember ive done a few oihers since just remember to wire the coils up the same way or it wont work
lines of force and all that and some of that heat proof insulation jcar electronics cheap small pack all colours good luck

Thanks for all the replies. I also tried the self amalgamting tape from Jaycar FIRST but found that it worked so well keeping in the shape that I
couldn't get it to pull down properly. I then used cotton tape (bias binding) as was recommended on some old car restoration sites, but also
couldn't pull it down enough.
I was going to just use estapol or the like and paint it so the shellac idea seems good. I thought however that the copper coils had to be insulated
completely from the body of the generator, so you would have to be electrically isolated?

Shellac would be appropriate. I have used it for high voltage stuff.

I might have a unknown condition genny left over from my alternator conversion mate, if its still there you can have it when you pick up the body.

I would only be able to accept if you throw in the engine, transmission, wheels and tyres and the baja body.
