WTD: Hella H4 lense for 70's beetle
Craig Torrens - April 18th, 2014 at 12:27 PM

Hi, I'm after 1 X Hella H4 Glass lense for a 70's headlight. This is just the glass front lense, and is a Hella 'Made in Germany' one that i'm after.

I'm not wanting the semi sealed H4 lights found on the 76 Beetle / Golf.

Please PM if you have one you would like to sell.

Cheers
Craig T

Hi Craig

Is this the aftermarket kit type that came with a separate lense and reflector that took the H4 bulb? I might have some, I had them in my 1302 in the 70s.

I'm not sure Steve, it looks factory to me but maybe its aftermarket......I have one on my 74 and I want to replace the other so they both match.:tu:

Would be great if you have one

Craig, I have these 2 you can have. They are both Hella made in Germany, but are not the same as each other - go figure.

My daughter is going back to Sydney on Monday night and can meet you to give them to you if you are interested.

Hi Jeff, the one that I'm after has the H4 mark on the lens like in my picture. The ones you have are the same as my spares, which are just normal beetle lenses. Thanks for your offer though
:tu:

Any luck Steve ??

Jeff, the one of the right is for a LHD car, that's why the E-code pattern is on the opposite side.

It kicks a beam up to the passengers side to light up road signs.

Craig, it looks like your bug has the stock semi sealed 75-75 headlights but someone has used a 3 screw chrome rim on it. (they normally have the one mounting screw at the bottom, adjusters are underneath)
unless they are some sort of weird Euro headlight that has made its way over here or as Steve says aftermarket, but not stock aussie ones for a 74 anyway.

Do you know if they use the P45t or P43t bulbs?

Hey Craig, just washing my bug, and I noticed that the headlights that I have now are

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb364/Jeff_Walsh/2014%20VW%20Photos/HellaHeadlightlenseinmycar.jpg

I only put them in during July 2012, so I may have bought them at the Nationals. I couldn't find the invoice to see where I got them from, but my wife should be able to find it in MYOB.

I am fairly certain that I got them from Just Kampers or maybe Vintage Vee Dub, but they were new, so they are quite possibly still available new.

Hi Joel, no they're not the semi sealed like on the 75-76.

Its basically a standard 12volt headlight but with the H4 stamped glass. The headlight assemblies are the original 74's (adjuster screws in the ring), but I have replaced the glass on one (H4 stamp) from my 'stash' of lenses..........just need another now !!!

Jeff, your lights are the semi sealed beam ones which are different to mine. I have those on my 76 model cars :tu:

Hi

I had a look over the weekend, I’m pretty sure I gave them to Boris at Vintage.

As I said before these were an aftermarket kit. They came with a reflector that took a normal H4 bulb, not the VW style and the glass was flat not curved like the VW ones.

You basically used the original VW rim and plastic housing and then fitted the Hella parts.

Thanks for have a look for me Steve :tu:

The glass on mine is curved the same as a standard VW lens, so even if you found yours it would have been different anyway.:fakesniff:
